Can you turn the light off while using the fan?

Yes. The light switch and fan switch are separate.

Is the power adapter 12v or 9v? Can this run off a 12v battery?

I have 2 other 9V / 6 D cell fans that I use in the camper & ice fishing house. I purchased the 5.5x2.1 mm 12V DC plug here on amazon and attach it to my 12 volt power pack. The 12V supply does increase the RPM on the fans, so I find that operating them on the lower setting moves enough air for me; all run great and none have fried in the last 2 years of using them this way. This looks like a really nice fan with the lights!

Does an adapter come with the fan? If not what kind would I need?

Does not come with adapter. You would need a 120v to 9v adapter with the standard 9v plug. I use 6 rechargeable D cell batteries.
