Can a tripod be used on this camcorder?

Yes, there is a standard tripod interface on the bottom of the camcorder.

I can’t get the compartment to open for the battery. It won’t slide open. Any suggestions or anyone else have this problem?

Sorry for the inconvenience. Please try to press the battery cover with the thumbs of both hands and push it hard towards the lens. Do not press the strap outside when closing the battery cover.
