I thought this product was a bit pricey but it works perfectly and is worth every penny. My brown sugar is soft weeks after putting it in a container. The terra cotta carving is beautiful too. I would recommend this product.

Works fine.

I put the terra cotta brown sugar saver in a small bowl of water; the instructions said 15 minutes, but I left it there for a few hours as I went to do other things. Patted it dry, put it in my container of rock solid brown sugar. After a couple of days I returned to the container and with a fork with mild to medium pressure was able to break the brick up into small pieces, and then the small pieces into the crystals of brown sugar that we'd all like to see. Came back a few days later still, and the brown sugar is still soft, so the piece of terra cotta is working perfectly.

Smaller than expected (it's about the size of a silver dollar), but if you follow the instructions, it works perfectly. I open my brown sugar container (2 quart size; super airtight seal to begin with) about 1-3 times per week, so I find that I have to re-soak the disk every 2-3 weeks, and overnight it re-softens any hardening sugar; but I imagine if you don't open your container very often (assuming also it is truly air-tight -- NEWSFLASH: zipper bags and ceramic jars with loose lids aren't airtight!!! Invest in ClickClack [my choice] or OXO POP lock containers), one 20 minute soaking in good clean water will suffice for quite awhile. Also, to those complaining it contaminates their sugar, I simply have to believe you are using unfiltered, dirty, or very hard tap water; terra cotta is by its very nature clean and food-safe. Despite our very dry climate here in Colorado, at least our water (in Boulder, off the Arapahoe Glacier) is clean and comes only semi-hard (generally doesn't require softening apart from health concerns). Try soaking in distilled or at least filtered water (after cleaning, disinfecting or using a brand new one), and see if you don't get better results.
