I purchased this because my previous ASUS router and been End of Life'd. And I was tired of the router companies deciding they would just stop patching their software and force their consumers to buy a new one. So I did some research and Mikrotik builds it's stuff to last for years and years. And it lets you have incredibly complex detailed controls over your network. However, the cost of this is ease of use. I would 100% not recommend this for your Mom or Dad or any kind of normal home user. It is not to be though of as a "home router" for the average consumer. This is a commercial grade kind or router. I ended up spending hours down the microtik forum and rabbit holes working out how to make it do what I wanted. Granted, it was plug and play generally speaking if you just wanted to go full default. But you aren't buying this to use it at default settings. It's a very powerful router, and it takes some know how to make it work. Now that I've had it for a number of years, and an AP as well. I have it doing exactly what I wanted with Vlans etc. And I feel it's a very solid choice for a router. But definitely make sure you are aware it's going to be a journey for you. You are going to need to understand it well before you will be able to configure it how you want. But overall, it's a super powerful router, without any moving parts and it'll last you for probably decades. I 3D printed some little feet for it to get it up into the air to make sure it got the best cooling as the case is also the heatsink for it.

I've been using an RB2011 for around 10 years now. It's stayed relevant through firmware updates, and is still supported, demonstrating a great value on this alone, as most routers are not supported with security updates for more than a few years. The only real issue I had with the RB2011 is that its older MIPS processor couldn't keep up with increasing internet speeds, capping out at ~300Mbps NAT (in the home it worked at line speed easily). So, the RB5009 brings in a more modern ARM CPU with more memory and updated switching, and the familiar (to me) interface. I can hit nearly the full 1Gbps that FIOS claims, so this is a big improvement. These have MANY features, and it is easy to configure it to be quite insecure, but it does have a default baseline that is pretty decent. Really the only thing a home user would want to change is IP>Services and enable only winbox and HTTP from 192.168.88.0/24 (default subnet, inside your home) and disable the others. That and change the password, which the default is no longer blank but on a sticker that comes with the router. The RB5009 also adds a 10Gbps SFP+ and a 2.5Gbps port (ether1). This will allow for the expansion of a 2.5/5/10 Gbps network in your home AND support higher ISP speeds when those improve, too (which is a limitation on the RB4011). This model doesn't have POE, but there is a version that does. I just use separate switches for this, for more flexibility. Overall, I'm happy with the performance and the ability to configure it to my needs. This is not a novice device at all, but it's not as hard as people make it to be if you stick with the default configuration. There are certainly worse devices that cost a lot more.

This is an amazing piece of kit - it's fast and silent, with a quality build and a good price. You can use the super basic system, but if you need to go beyond that and you've never used RouterOS, plan on learning a lot, even as a network technician. It's got it's own way of labeling things, and they kind of make you do everything the hard way. Not fun, oh boy is it worth it to get set up, because you can control *everything.* Things you didn't even realize were a thing. Update: I started using a 10sfp+ module, and it gets pretty hot. I'm putting a fan on it, so hopefully that helps. Did i mention how crisp my internet shortens is not compared to having my tp link Deco xe75s doing the routing? It's fast.

Does everything it claims to be able to do. This router requires networking knowledge but otherwise it's a great router

Very robust router for home and small/medium offices. I’ve been using MikroTik routers for 15 years and have never experienced a hardware issue. Setup isn’t easy—if you want easy, just don’t use routers and stick to Ubiquiti. This one can be PoE powered (port 1) and can run small Docker containers, perfect for Pi-hole. It has tons of features, but the ones I love are: 1. You decide if a port is WAN or LAN—you can have as many WANs as you want. 2. VLAN support to isolate devices (you’ll need to configure this on any chained switches and Wi-Fi APs too). 3. Route selection based on origin or destination. Which is very useful for sending traffic through a VPN. 4. Multiple ISPs with failover. 5. Traffic analysis. 6. Graphing. 7. Parental controls. The only thing I dislike is the scripting—man, scripting in MikroTik is hard, even for AI.

I'm a huge Mikrotik fan. I use them for home and work. The amount of features and horsepower you get for your dollar with Mikrotik is amazing. Plus Mikrotik seems to support their hardware with RouterOS upgrades forever. The RB5009 is no different. This unit works awesome. However, my only complaint is with the SFP port. The SFP port on this unit is useless. I tried 4 different makes of SFP fiber modules including the Mikrotik brand (which Mikrotik states is compatible) and none of them work. It will not auto negotiate and even manually configuring it causes network flapping. I thought maybe I had a bad unit but after a little bit of research online everyone with a RB5009 is having the same issue. I'm not sure how this until got released with such a glaring flaw. With that said, I bought an inexpensive set of media converters to use with it and they work fine. I'm hoping the SFP port gets sorted out in a future release of RouterOS.

I upgraded from the RB3011, which is still working perfectly, but can't manage the bandwidth of my current fiber ISP. The 5009 is incredibly fast! Mikrotik made it extremely easy to migrate from one to the other, with a little help from Claude. Definitely worth the upgrade! BUT: tue stock 24V power supply seems a best weak. It cannot handle when my house switches from grid to battery backup, which is only 4ms. The RB5009 reboots or crashes altogether. Solution was easy: using a beefier 48V/2A power supply, which is generally used for PoE switches. That fixed the problem

Darüber hinaus hat MikroTik seinen YouTube-Kanal erweitert, der mittlerweile auf moderne Art und Weise die Funktionen der Geräte vorstellt. Auch kleine Tutorials gibt es mittlerweile. Privat bin ich vom RB3011 umgestiegen und kann nur sagen, "den kriegt man nicht kaputt". Tolles Teil!

Excellent Router and a switch .. Be aware, this is not a consumer type product (pick up from the shelf and deploy), it has to be configured and expects you to deeply understand each step. But that's the beauty, you get complete granular control on your network. I truly wish they had a few more 2.5 Gig ports to make it a proper Backplane Switch for my network..

Can't really fault this router at the price point.As a software and embedded engineer by trade, I like to play. There's loads to play with on a MikroTik. Myself and my partner work from home and relay on decent internet, so it has to be stable too-can't fault it on this front. Have it running unbound as a recurisve resolver in a container(podman works better than docker for building to MikroTik I've found) - no issues there either. Handles my 1Gbps PPPoE connection fine. My ISP gives out Eero 6+ have them in bridge mode as the wireless APs and I'm using this as my main router. Default settings and "quick set" in WinBox software, make it pretty easy to get started with too considering the target audience. I actually bought a new Hex S first, which is a cracking little router for the price, but couldn't forgive the ARMv5 architecture for containers so I returned it. As ARMv8 this router doesn't have that issue.

Really amazing product. Amazing deal. The only problem is, the power supply should have been AU Plug, not EU. But I’m happy with the transaction. Came before 21/5/26
