Due to sensitive skin, I haven't used a disposable razor for decades. For most of that time, any inexpensive electric razor worked adequately, but as my beard turned grey I had more and more issues shaving these thicker bristly white hairs. Over the last decade or so I've pretty much given up on shaving at all (except for using hair clippers to keep it short) despite buying multiple razors and hoping for a good shave. For the longest time, I used a Panasonic ES8103 that left me with a shave that wasn't so good even after passing over the same area 10-20 times. I then tried a Norelco OneBlade which actually worked ok but was comparatively messy and the blades only worked well for a short time and then required more passes to get a progressively poorer shave. And finally, the biggest waste of money was the Norelco Series 5000 which refused to shave my beard from day one. Even after a continuous 15 minutes of running it over my face still felt rough and numerous stubborn hairs remained here and there. On top of that, it was very difficult to reassemble after taking it apart to clean. I finally decided to buy the best-rated razor on the market which was the Braun Series 9. I did not have any great expectations but was pleasantly surprised. Even with fairly long stubble as my clippers don't cut very close the razer gave me a close shave after just one or two passes over any one area. The final result left my face smooth to the touch; a much closer shave than I've ever gotten from an electric razor. This razor is absurdly expensive, but if you can't get a good shave from a cheaper model certainly give it a try. As far as the cleaner that comes with this model, it does appear to work as intended, although I will have to use it longer before I can decide if it is just a gimmick or not. If you travel a lot the case that contains an external battery should be great but I probably will use it only rarely. My only complaint is that the instructions are completely useless. There are pages of pictograms that I couldn't make any sense of. I had to go only to find a review that covered the same information using words. Edit added after 2 months of use: I don't really have much to say about the performance of the razor as it continues to shave remarkably well. My only developing concerns are in regard to cleaning. The head contains some intricate parts many of which cannot be reached with the small brush provided and I don't think it was designed to be disassembled. This makes getting the version with the cleaning station almost obligatory. While it works pretty well this bulky device isn't perfect. Not only is some manual cleaning required it becomes necessary to clean the cleaning device as well. So far everything remains clean enough using the cleaner with some manual cleaning but if you have OCD it will probably drive you nuts that it is difficult if not impossible to get everything inside the razor perfectly clean.

I ordered this Braun on January 15, and received it on January 17. I have been using it and a Norelco i9000 Prestige Ultra. Both were purchased from Amazon. I purchased the Norelco in November and wrote a review. I also have a Panasonic Arc 4 that was purchased during the Summer of 2020. This is probably the best electric shaver from Braun. It gives a very comfortable shave. The shaver feels good in the hand. The feel is quite nice and the vibration is not excessive. The advantage the Braun has over the Norelco and the Panasonic is its cleaning system. Norelco uses a pod style cleaning system. The pod system consists of a round container that is housed inside a larger stand that mimics its rounded shape. The stand is passive and does not have an electrical connection. The Norelco shaver's battery provides the power to pump the detergent from the container to the top of the stand. Evaporation takes care of the drying process. The fluid leaves behind a small amount of lubricant. The shaver will need to recharge on the included holder. The Panasonics use a vertical cleaning station. The station has its own power supply. The station cleans, charges, lubricates, and dries the shaver. The recent models use a small packet of detergent that is added to a water tank at the bottom of the stand. Mine uses the older plastic cartridge system. Norelco and Panasonic use detergents to clean their shavers. Braun uses alcohol. The Braun system is the most effective out of the three. The Braun cleaning stand uses a cartridge filled with what is likely denatured alcohol. A mild fragrance and a special lubricant are part of the fluid. The alcohol evaporates quickly, so the shaver is ready as soon as the cleaning procedure is complete. The stand cleans, charges, lubricates, and dries the shaver. One thing to keep in mind. Whether you use the cleaning system or not, the cleaning fluid will evaporate. It is harder to extend the life of the cleaning cartridge because the alcohol will evaporate on its own. The Braun shaves close without irritation. I recommend using light pressure against the skin. Doing so will help avoid irritation and it will extend the life of the foil. Move the shaver slowly and allow the foil to glide on the skin. You can use a product like Williams Lectric Shave to help the foil glide on the skin. I recommend using a spray lubricant on the shaver's foils and blades after each cleaning. You can hear the difference between a lubricated shaver versus one that has no additional lubricant. The cleaning system leaves a very small amount of lubricant but it does not hurt to add a drop of shaver oil. Let us say you bought this shaver without the cleaning stand. In that case, you can use a barber shop product that lubricates and sanitizes the device. In my humble opinion, this shaver should not be cleaned in hard tap water. Obviously, I cannot speak with authority because I am not a shaver engineer. I am speaking based on many years of experience with electric shavers. There are three best practices to extend the life of your foils and blades. Do not press hard against the skin when shaving. Do not use hard water to clean your shaver. And lubricate the shaver before use. Hard water leaves mineral build up on the foil. You should definitely consider purchasing the shaver with a cleaning system if you live in an area where the tap water is hard. Braun's quality has improved since my very first one. I bought the first generation of Braun when they came out with their cleaning stand. That was 23-25 years ago, if memory serves. The foil on that shaver lasted less than a year. The good news is that they still use the same alcohol-based cleaning system. The quality of this generation is superior to my old Braun. Though only time will tell how long the foils, blades, and most importantly, the battery, will last. Subjectively, the razor feels great. It has the look of quality. Though I would prefer an all metal housing. At this price range, the shaver body should be made of a strong metal alloy. The same can be said for its competitors though. These are luxury products. The price is a bit high. However, keep in mind the convenience of the automatic cleaning system. Is it worth it to have a system that automatically cleans, charges, and dries your shaver? Think of how much time and effort that can spare you. In my opinion, the automatic cleaning system is a must-have if you live in an area where the tap water is hard. I wrote this review with the assumption that the reader is looking for a high-end shaver kit that includes an automatic cleaning system. The three brands that fit that category are Norelco, Panasonic, and Braun. Each has its strong points. The rotary shavers from Norelco are the quietest and has the least amount of vibration. Rotary shaver heads and blades tend to last longer. However, in my opinion, they may not be best for sensitive skin. Panasonic is the most durable. I have gotten seven years from a set of foils and blades by following the best practices I mentioned above. They last the longest. I would love to try an Arc 6 but the price is a bit steep. The Braun has the best cleaning system. The Braun also has the best accessories, like the travel case with a built-in battery. Pick your shaver and enjoy many years of use. This is a good time to be an electric shaver enthusiasts. I can highly recommend the Braun Series 9 Pro to anyone who wants a luxury electric shaver. It is also a good choice for those who travel a lot. The built-in battery in the travel case can recharge the shaver. I suppose you could take the charging cable with you; however, if you travel internationally, the plug may not work at your location. The travel case is something you may never need but it is nice to have if you ever do need it. It is a hard case that protects your shaver. Just be careful and check the recent TSA rules before you take it with you to the airport.

I'm a Middle Eastern man with olive skin and black hair. The contrast of those colors means that, even if I just had a very close shave the day before, it still looks like it's been at least a few days since I last shaved. To counteract this permanent 5 o'clock shadow, I've been shaving with a safety razor for nearly the past ten years. This method definitely gave me the closest shaves I've ever had, but it wasn't without its problems. I'd nick myself somewhere most of the time; I would often get razor bumps, even after applying an aftershave balm like the one Bevel makes; and, perhaps worst of all for me, it was untenably time-consuming. If I wasn't rushing and really wanted to do the job right, I would spend about half an hour shaving. That's with the grain *and* against the grain. And then, in about 48 hours, all that work would be rendered useless as the 5 o'clock shadow reared its stubbly head once again. I had honestly come to dread shaving, and having recently begun a job that requires me to be in the office three days a week and discourages slovenliness in its employees, I just couldn't maintain that intensive time investment anymore. Enter the Braun Series 9 Pro. From the moment I first used it, I knew it was an absolute game-changer. It glides across my face without the slightest painful tug at any one of my facial hairs. The sideburn trimmer attached to the back also works very well. This thing has cut down my shaving time by more than two thirds; instead of half an hour, it often takes me something like seven minutes to do a full shave now. If I'm being completely honest, the result is not as close as one would get with wet shaving, but I will say that it gets you about 90%–95% of the way there, far more so than any other electric razor I've ever tried. I'll also note that, while it does a phenomenal job on my face, it can't quite get all the hairs on my neck, despite all my razor-angling and skin-stretching. But really, the pros outweigh the cons so vastly that it's a no-brainer for me. I will probably never go back to wet shaving, unless I'm at a barber shop and someone else is doing it for me. My only piece of advice would be to wait until this thing is marked down by at least $50. Yes, you get what you pay for, and this thing delivers amazing results, but it's still almost ridiculously expensive. Having said that, even if you paid full price for it (like I ended up doing), I very much doubt you'll be disappointed after using it.

April, 2026 update: Unfortunately, while I still stand by most of my praise from a few years ago, I had to dock this shaver a star. First, the cleaning cartridges that you put into the base do not last very long. Even when it seems like there’s still plenty of unused solution in them, you push the button on the base and it just doesn’t do anything. You throw in a fresh cartridge and it works again. Seems like kind of a rip off. Second, when I run a cleaning cycle now, there’s a lot of grime and small hair fragments in the cavity of the base where the shaver goes. I’ve tried cleaning it with alcohol, cotton swabs and Kleenexes but it just keeps getting messy again, and this is despite me keeping the razor itself clean as I documented in my original review. Third, and maybe even most disappointingly, the power switch on my shaver busted a couple weeks ago – just popped right off when I pushed it. I have not been rough with this thing. I take good care of it. For a premium product, I would expect better build quality. Other than that, still pretty good, and here’s the original review. Original review: I've owned several Braun electric shavers but never invested in the higher-up models like this one. I finally decided to treat myself, and I'm glad I did. Like any shaver, there is a break-in period, so don't expect the best shave of your life the first couple times you use this, but after a week of use, my face got used to it and now it provides the closest, most comfortable shave I've ever experienced with an electric. I don't even need to use any pre-shave products. I can hop out of the shower, dry off my face and shave smoothly without any irritation. This is the first Braun unit I've owned where (with a couple exceptions) I get a good shave on a single pass. The exceptions are a couple of stubborn spots around my jaw line, but that's to be expected. It's nice not to have to go over the same areas repeatedly which can lead to irritation. I was especially eager to try a shaver with a cleaning/charging station, and this really contributes to the overall value despite the higher price tag of this model. I will say, the first time I ran the cleaning process, when I removed the shaver from the base an hour later, it was still pretty wet with the solution. However, this seemed to have been a one-time thing, because I've been using the base every two days for the past month or so and it has worked flawlessly every time since. I love the fresh, clean scent the cleaning solution leaves behind, and it also lubricates the foils just enough for a smooth shave without excessive oiliness. I've been removing the shave head, dumping out the excess hair and cleaning the inside of the shaver with a brush as I've read this helps ensure a good, thorough cleaning and prevent hair from building up and clogging the base. I haven't had the opportunity to travel with my new Braun yet, but I think the smart case that charges the shaver is a stroke of genius and I can't wait to try it. I have a business trip coming up in a few weeks so I'll get a chance to bring my new shaver along with me. It'll be great not to need to bring the charging cable, or charge it up before leaving and hope you have enough juice to last you the trip. The case should provide ample power for the four days I'll be on my trip. Overall, if you've been buying the cheaper Braun models or using other inexpensive electric shavers and you're thinking of upgrading, this model is well worth considering. I'm extremely pleased with mine!

I have been using a Braun Series 7 razor for over a decade and have had two of them. The Series 7 was the first electric razor to get me away from shaving with a blade, and I have been generally happy with it. Based on several reviews, I decided to give the Series 9 a try. It is an improvement over the Series 7 in just about every way. I have waited several weeks before writing this, since a new shaving head always feels a little better than an older one. Nevertheless, the Series 9 is significantly better at shaving, which is its primary purpose. It shaves more easily. A close shave requires less pressure. It does a much better job of lifting difficult hairs, such as at the front of the neck. The shave is more comfortable. Considering that the Series 7 was very good, I am impressed. As for other factors, the Series 9 is lighter than the Series 7, which surprised me since they are the same size. The primary displays about battery life and status of hygiene, which are on the base of the Series 7 shaver, have been moved to the cleaning station, which is an entirely new design. The only indicators on the razor are a bar graph for battery life (it only makes numbers when there are nine or fewer minutes of charge remaining) and a few icons that light up, but do not give a status indication. The trimmer is in back and slides up instead of popping out from the front. My first Series 7 trimmer broke, and I have been babying the second one. The Series 9 design is more robust. One thing that drove me crazy about the Series 7 cleaning station is that it allowed the cleaning solution to come into contact with the body of the shaver, and, over time, the cleaning solution dissolved the finish. The new cleaning station seems to have rubber dams to prevent that from happening, but only time will tell. It took a few years to become a problem with the old one. The new cleaning station also uses a fan to dry the shaver while the old one did not. The battery life is excellent, although the Series 7 was also good. I was intrigued by the travel case, which contains a battery that can re-charge the shaver while on the road. The travel case is surprisingly big and heavy. It does offer superb protection while traveling. I have thrown it into checked luggage with no problem. My first Series 7 came with a clear plastic case that could pop open in a suitcase. The second Series 7 came with a hardened cloth case, that did not offer much protection. There is a window in the Series 9 travel case that allows you to see the LED on the shaver inside. The shaver and the travel case charge using the same wall plug. The shaver end is the same as the Series 7, but the part that plugs into the wall is considerably smaller, which is a good thing. The cord is no longer coiled. I charge the travel case with my old Series 7 plug without issue. Overall, the shaving experience justifies the price, which is saying something considering how expensive the system is. I am happy with the Series 9, cleaning station, and travel case combo.

I have had electric shavers from Braun, “Company N,” and “Company R.” In fact, until the subject of this review, I had owned only one Braun shaver, a Series 7 that lasted for sixteen years – until I dropped it onto a concrete floor from a considerable height, and it still worked even then, albeit taped together. In this state it nevertheless gave a closer shave than the others, and so it made sense to replace it with another Braun. And here we are. The Braun Series 9 Pro is available in a bewildering range of SKUs. This one (9974cc) is a notch below the top of the line, as it does not have the separate beard-trimming attachment…because I don’t have a beard. But it does have the charging/cleaning station (the “SmartCare Center”), and it does have the “PowerCase,” which I call the “charging casket,” which allows many days’ away-from-home charging without any electrical connection. So, what’s it like to live with one of these things? I’ve had this one for several months, and I held back on writing this review until I had run through seven refill cleaning cartridges; this is important, because it’s an ongoing cost. Here’s the lifestyle, and the cost breakdown. Now, I know that some owners try to stretch the life of a cartridge – the chief consumable – by cleaning only infrequently, but I vote the other way: I typically clean/charge the shaver after every use (if not on the road), so my usage rate and cost numbers here are conservative. As of this writing, I’ve had the shaver for just shy of seven months and have recorded the rate at which I’m replacing the cleaning cartridges. How long does a cartridge last? In my use, the first cartridge went 19 shaves (I assume this was a break-in period), while the other six managed 22 or 23 shaves each, with an average of 22.8. Call it 23. As I write, a pack of six cartridges costs 32 dollars; therefore, we might say that those six cartridges would give 6x23=138 shaves, for a cost of 23.2 cents per shave, which is effectively 23.2 cents per day in my use of the cleaning cartridges. But to be complete, we must add in the cost of replacement shaver heads; these should be replaced annually, or even, as it says on the package, every 18 months, but I have long been in the habit of replacing them twice a year, in June and December. Currently, a Series 9 shaver head costs 70 dollars. Dividing that by half a year’s 182.5 days gives an additional 38.4 cents per shave, for a total of 61.6 cents per shave. But as I say, most users will probably replace the shaver head only annually, and many will try to stretch the cleaning cartridges. To this last point, I should warn that going two or more shaves between cleanings will cause the clean/charge station to kick into a “higher gear” at the next use, running a longer cycle and using more fluid, because it will sense the need for additional cleaning time. When used daily in 24-hour cycles, the shortest cleaning cycle is triggered – i.e., only one of the three “Cleaning Program” lights is lit. In some instances (weekends), I have delayed the next shave for an additional half-day, and in those cases, two lights have lit, and the cleaner runs for a longer time. In one instance only – after several days away, using the “casket” for charging – were all three lights and the longest cleaning cycle triggered. And it was long indeed. What this means is that cleaning the shaver every *other* day probably won’t make the cartridge last twice as long, because each cleaning will use more fluid. One reaches a point of diminishing returns. Me, I’d rather have a clean shaver head every day. There are other places in life where one might better save a few pennies. I can say further that this Series 9 machine is a bit more “thirsty” than my long-lived Series 7 Braun. That one would reliably go 25-27 cleanings per cartridge. (Observer: “You must be an engineer.” Me: “What gave it away?”) On the favorable side, the new Braun is much more quiet than the old one, both in use up near one’s ears and in the charger during the cleaning cycle. I can’t say that the old one caused me permanent hearing loss, but I did wonder from time to time. This new one is a mere hummer by comparison. The product descriptions for the many Braun SKUs are liberally supplied with photos, so I have added only three here. The first shows what comes in the kit, including the documentation. (But I neglected to include a cleaning cartridge in the pic; rest assured, it includes your first one.) The second picture shows the shaver in the “charging casket.” I used this on a road trip, and it has far more re-charging capacity than I needed over those several days. The third photo shows the proprietary power chord/DC adapter. The kit includes just one of these. In normal use it will be plugged into the cleaning/charging station; or it can charge the shaver directly; or it can charge the road-trip “casket” before and after a journey. Pick any one at a given time. About the documentation: You get a booklet for the shaver and another for the charging station, plus the separate cartoon strip which tells you not to put a wet-used shaver into the charging station; dry it first. (I have tried wet-shaving and find no advantage but much extra cleanup time, so I don’t care about this). The booklets both rely mainly on pictorials, with a minimum of text…except for the Safety Warnings which nobody reads; these gripping details are provided in English, French, and Spanish. That’s the world we live in, I suppose. Hey, where does all this come from? Turns out this product is a Citizen of the World. The shaver itself, and the Series 9 replacement heads (“94M”) are made in Germany; the clean/charge base station is made in Hungary; the on-the-road charging casket is made in China; and the cleaning cartridges are made in…Ireland? Well, I’ll be darned. User tip: After each shave, you can extend the life of your cleaning cartridge by simply popping off the shaver head and blowing out the whiskers and skin shards from it and from the shaver head mount. That’s probably 90% of what’s left after a shave. Takes only seconds.

Let me tell you why I bought this, I am 41 (but look younger,..don't judge let me dream ok?)...anyways, my point is that I started thinning my hair at the top (crowning), not enough for anyone to notice, (the wife said is BARELY noticeable), but that was enough for me to shave my whole head. I always said I would go down on my own terms (as far as getting bald goes), I will not have comb-overs or very thin at the top and long on the sides, no,... just no. So before we get to any of these scenarios.... I'm shaving it all. I bought this based on the fact that Dwayne Johnson uses this as his head shaver and I always thought that he shaved with a blade due to it being a perfect shave. I watched a youtube video where the guy reviews it (he reviews all sorts of shavers for his bald head and whatnot), but in his review he talks about how it feels like it's like razor shaving across the grain. This didn't sit well with me for the price because I wanted something that felt like a razor shave. So I was full of remorse after I bought it, thinking it was too expensive for what I wanted it.... but then it came. Let me tell you, this thing is light but at the same time feels expensive at the same time. I shaved with shaving soap applied (not dry shave) and didn't rinse the extra hair on first try just to see how much it would accumulate. Hair wasn't too long either, last shave was 3 days ago maybe. This thing worked wonders. It took care of all hairs without pulling (didn't try it on face since I don't shave my face), and it felt like a true razor shave against the grain when I was done. I did the back of my neck and I didn't stretch the skin as I should've and it cut way too close, like burning close when I applied the after shave so be careful there and stretch out the skin correctly. After the head dried, it does feel (in some spots) like its a razor shave across the grain but I suspect is nothing I can't fix next time with another pass and rinsing out the hairs after a few strokes. This is the real deal. I mean, I'm still salty about the price cause holy prometheus this thing is expensive and no shaver should be this much ever but it gets the job done and I'm looking forward to this never dying on me. lol. One can dream, but point is, it's okay.

EDIT: I was still never able to get in contact with Braun customer support. Amazon customer service came to the rescue so huge shout out to them for the help. But seriously, it’s ridiculous to spend so much to get a name brand product (rather than no-name Chinese knockoff) expecting to have that support from the manufacturer and not be able to get it. I bought this thinking I would get something good for the excessive amount of money I'd be spending on it rather than a cheaper one. The shaver itself seems to work great, though I do still get slight nicks and irritation from sensitive skin on my neck. My issue with this is that not even a month after setting up the cleaning station and only using it a few times the cleaning station has stopped working entirely and will not even turn on at this point. That wouldn't be such a huge problem if I wasn't outside the return period and could actually get in touch with customer service. Braun customer service is absolutely impossible to get in touch with. If you can their phone number DURING THEIR POSTED HOURS, you get a message saying they're not available. The message said that they are not available and to call after 2PM EST......it was 2:36PM EST when I called. Their chat option just says they're all busy chatting. This has been going on for over a week now. So at this point, I've got a useless cleaning stand for my shaver and no customer service to get a replacement. A complete waste of almost $300. Well known name brand does not mean good product/warranty/customer service.

So far so good. Previously owned a top of the line Philips rotary blade shaver which stopped charging. It lasted around 4 or so years. I was initially going to buy another Philips unit but decided to do some research and see what other options were out there. After a couple of months of research I narrowed it down to the Braun Series 9 Pro 9477cc, the Panasonic Arc5 or Arc6 and the Philips S9000 Prestige. The travel charging case is what sold me on the Braun. I’ve used it three times since I bought it. Twice on my face and once on my head. Very happy with the closeness of the shave and how quickly it got the job done. Each shave was with 2 days stubble which is quite coarse. I was concerned with the switch to foils whether this would cause me any discomfort. I’m pleased to say this is mot the case. It’s a very comfortable shave albeit much noisier than my previous shaver. The instructions are just illustrations. If I’m paying for your best product I expect much better. This would probably be my only gripe so far though.

Great shave and very comfy to use

I have a sensitive skin and coarse hair. This shaver gives me the closest shave without a razor. I try using this under the shower with hair conditioner and it works flawlessly. Since the machine is new, there are a few cuts here or there and I wouldn't go near my ears yet but overall it's an upgrade from my round clipped Phillips series 8. The cleaning station is a great tool and I try using it all the time. The liquid is readily available compared to the Phillips ons and it even survived a move with zero spillage.
