I was looking for a high-quality variable ND (VND) filter available in various thread sizes and purchased the NiSi True Color ND-Vario 1-5 Pro Nano; I needed a smooth (stepless) adjustment ring and a screw-in lever to achieve seamless transitions. Recognizing NiSi's reputation, I chose this model for its promising features and build quality. I have been using it for a few months and can outline the pros and cons I've discovered. Pros • Large design with knurled edges for easy screwing on/off • Stepless adjustment for fluid transitions • Includes a screw-in adjustment lever • Physical hard stops at the ends for tactile feedback Cons • Bulky carrying and storage system • No rear cap, requiring the use of a hard case • The plastic front cap is cumbersome to use • Not magnetic • High price compared to other options that offer more convenience and a wider range of stops Overall, the filter features nano-coated HUC glass, a screw-in adjustment lever, two cases, and physical hard stops at both ends of the intensity range. Its high-quality design, including a wide knurled edge and a screw-in adjustment lever, aims to provide reliable performance and durability.

I’m extremely disappointed with this purchase. The NiSi True Color VND 1–5 arrived with the box already opened, which immediately raised concerns about whether the item was new or previously returned. When I checked the contents, the adjustment lever (the small handle used to control the ND strength) was missing. On top of that, the filter thread does not screw onto the lens properly, which makes the filter unusable. Because of these issues, the product cannot be used at all for its intended purpose. This is especially frustrating because this filter is not cheap, and I needed it for work. Receiving an opened box with missing parts and a defective thread is unacceptable for a product in this price range. I had to start a return immediately. Very disappointing experience.

Il NiSi True Color ND variabile 1–5 stop da 82 mm è uno dei filtri più affidabili che abbia utilizzato per la fotografia e video in esterni. La qualità costruttiva è molto alta: l’anello di rotazione è fluido e preciso, senza scatti o giochi, e permette di regolare la densità in modo graduale e controllato. Il formato da 82 mm è ideale per obiettivi luminosi e si integra bene nel mio set di filtri. Il punto forte è la resa cromatica: rispetto ad altri ND variabili, questo mantiene davvero una dominante colore minima. Le immagini restano naturali, con una buona fedeltà dei toni anche alle densità più alte. Anche la nitidezza dell’immagine non risulta compromessa in modo evidente. Si nota una buona gestione del controllo della luce fino a circa 5 stop, rendendolo molto versatile sia per fotografia paesaggistica che per video con tempi di esposizione controllati. Nel complesso è un filtro professionale, affidabile e molto ben calibrato. Il prezzo è alto, ma giustificato dalla qualità ottica e dalla precisione meccanica. Consigliato per chi cerca risultati seri senza compromessi.

Com'è noto ai videomakers e come è nel nome dei filtri, i NiSi sono i filtri ND con meno dominanti in assoluto. Costano tanto, ma la qualità è eccezionale. Il sistema con i 2 STOP (e non il giro infinito dei dischi) permette di sapere al volo il punto di minor oscuramento e quello maggiore. Straconsigliato ai professionisti

Worth every penny

I did a lot of research on line before buying this NISI ND filter. I have used it in my Canon 70-200 and 24-70 2.8 lens on a Canon R5C. As the 24-70 has an 82mm thread I bought an 82mm adapter to fit the 77mm thread on the 70-200. The filter maintains the true colors of the subject and the 1-5 stops are perfect for the videos that I shoot. It's expensive but worth it.
