Do the seconds “tick” by or is it a smooth sliding second hand?

It is a smooth sliding second hand, The clock adopts a super silent movement, so we can't hear the sound of the second hand, so it won't affect our sleep at night.

Can anyone please tell me the depth of this clock? I know it is 12" diameter. Thank you.

I took my new clock to my office immediately, so, from home, I can't tell you the exact depth, but it's safe to say it is between 1 and 1/12 to 2 inches deep. By the way, it's a fantastic clock and keeps time in sync with the atomic clock in my government building. A good purchase.

Will this operate in a hot environment? Say around 100°?

I use mine in my attic and it can get pretty hot up there during the summer. No issues yet.
