Versatile functions, excellent value. I highly recommend it, for beginners AND beyond.
You can look at the manual here to see exactly what you get:http://rdn.harmanpro.com/product_documents/documents/242_1328827066/BP90%20Manual%205014596-A_original.pdfThe controls are a bit complicated, with only a two-digit display and a couple of LEDs to guide you; however, the included manual is thorough and easy to understand. The only thing that bothers me is that there are only buttons to operate the device, and it really could have used at least one knob. Other than that, when you follow the instructions it's easy to set up a "preset", which basically saves your current effects settings to a number. You can switch between your presets very easily with the two footswitches. FAIR WARNING: of the 100 presets, you can only save custom settings for the first 50; numbers 51-100 are factory settings that can't be saved over. Still, 50 is a lot of presets (I've been using this for months and haven't filled 20 of them yet), and many of the factory presets are pretty cool. Also, you can customize without saving your changes permanently, so you can be free to experiment without overwriting anything. There is way to bypass the effects and play clean audio through the BP90: pressing both pedals at once. (This is explained in the manual and is indicated on the device itself, but it may not be obvious.) It can be a bit tricky to nail them at the same time, but it works well enough. The expression pedal is the best part, which can be custom assigned to a variety of parameters (for example, changing the tremelo rate or the amount of decay on a delay effect while playing,) or operate like a classic wah pedal. The built-in drum machine was icing on the cake when I bought this, though I've used it a lot more than I expected to.There is a built-in tuner, but I already have a tuner I like so I don't use this one.The headphone jack is a nice addition, but I rarely use it since the volume control is pretty clunky. The effects are all digitally processed, and even though the quality may not be as good as their analog cousins, they still sound the way they're supposed to. This is where the price is unbeatable; you get a large, varied library of effects for the same price as a single analog phaser.

A little too complex; not intuitive. The sound effects are good and sufficient for my needs - I play in a church band. But getting to the drum machine feature required focused study just to select and use it. It does not have an 'off' switch - something I expected for a complex component. To turn it off, it must be unplugged. After stumbling around for direction, I surmised that you have to go online for the instruction manual - no instructions were included in the shipment ...And there was nothing to direct me to the DigiTech website - nothing. Very disappointing. So, if you want to simply modify the sound of your bass, this is ok. But for live performances that required multiple sound changes, much practice would be required.

Better than I even thought it was going to be. Holy Bejeebus. This thing is very nice and very friendly for a newbie.Definitely worth the investment for anyone looking for some nice effects that are easily portable.

Noisy cracks on output.
That's the second BP90 I was buying. The 1st one get me satisfaction for several years but it was time to get him a replacement (start to have false contact). I was happy with the 1st one as i'm not a professional and it was perfect for the price range. The new one arrive in a perfect packaging condition but on the 1st try, I was kind of disappointed. Since a cable is connected on the input, you can hear noisy cracks. I've tried different ways (headphone output, left and right output, connect the transformer through a power supply filter, try with other equipment connected on the input...but I still have these little cracks that make it impossible to use, even for practicing. I've returned it. Refund is on the way. Will probably buy another multieffects soon.

Nice programmable effects machine for guitar/bass
Right out of the box, this is an awesome machine. As a matter of fact, you could actually toss your existing pedal collection and just use this one. But I wouldn't go too fast before checking it out to see if the quality of your effects from the BP90 is good enough.Example? The Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi. For me, there's nothing like it for over the top fuzz, powerful sustain and incredible feedback effects. The BP90 has all of this as well. It's to a lesser degree somewhat, and you might have some difficulty dialing in the effect. But it's there. My biggest issue (and probably the same for most novices ) is the expression pedal. It's a little tricky bringing it to life. I'm trying to figure out why it isn't easier to function. The good news is that I found some very well done videos on line which should explain it all more clearly than the manual.Other than that, you have 20 stomp effects, 50 preprogrammed models with 25 custom programs (DIY) a drum button with tempo to help you keep time, a nice library of amps, which is surprisingly accurate, and enough stuff to keep you busy for a while. Using your customized effects, you could program a set for live recording. I wished it had a looper, but you can't have it all in one box.
