Dynasty 1614 Series Door Closer, Sprayed Duronotic Bronze, Spring 1-4, ADA

This was my first automatic door closer install. I installed it as a parallel arm install on my 32" garage entry door that slams shut. Pretty straight forward but the one thing that could pose a problem that another reviewer mentioned would be mounting the main body to high on the door and not allowing the arm to clear the threshold. If I remember correctly the instructions say to mount the main body 3 3/4" from the underside of threshold. This wasn't enough clearance and would of caused the arm to hit the upper threshold and the door would be stuck open 12" or so. I ended up mounting it about another inch lower on the door than the 3 3/4" (so about 4 3/4" from the underside of the threshold). I caught it while mocking it up so I would suggest if you have not installed one of these to loosely attach the arm, plate and main body and put it up to your door to get the proper clearance for a parallel arm install. Other than that this closer is a nice piece of hardware. It does exactly what I wanted in not slamming the door shut but latching it properly when it does close. The individual latch/sweep/backcheck adjustments are great. I did have to lower the backcheck quite a bit to not make the door so hard to open. It matched our oil rubbed bronze hardware perfectly.

I purchased the Dynasty Hardware Door Closer (Series 1614) because it looks exactly like the 20 year old leaking worn out door closer that it is replacing. This was installed on an exterior industrial building entrance door (aluminum frame. tempered glass center) and I was able to use all the existing mounting holes in the door and frame. It can be configured for 3 different types of installation (regular arm, top jamb, & parallel arm). It came with clear, detailed instructions, mounting template, and all the necessary hardware for installation. Once installed, the latching and sweep speed adjustments were quick and simple.

A good quality unit. Unless one is experienced with installing door closers, installation can be quite complicated. This includes which of 3 methods that the unit can be installed, actual installation, and adjustment. After watching several Utube videos, the three issues were clearly explained. This resulted in a straight forward installation. Reading the instructions would not have helped much. The mounting template, once installation is understood, is very handy and works. Adjustment once installed can be a little sensitive. However, not having the heavy door slamming closed and also damaging the alarm sensor has been a great improvement.

I needed to replace a broken closer at the entry door to our church. Even though I had never done this kind of repair before, this worked out very well. The hole measurement was an exact match to original, so easy to swap (9 1/6" x 3/4". Read the instructions a couple times, to make sure I oriented correctly (S (Sweep) & L (Latch) adjustments facing hinges.) The rest was straight forward. After installing, it the default tensions were pretty close, and easy to adjust to make it Latch without slamming hard. My main "learning trial", was to not unscrew the rod to make it fit the holder without tension, but to leave the rod near to original, and pull the arm to tension it to fit. The screw rod length determined how far (degrees) the door would max open, and I needed mine about 120. The box was labeled "Commercial", and I like that Grade 1 means 2 million cycles. (That's almost forever: 200+ every day for 25 years)

Update: 6 years later, still works. Amazing. I have two autistic kids... and for the life of me, I cannot get them to close the doors. The other issue is that they break EVERYTHING. I was skeptical that this wouldn’t break in less than a month. It hasn’t broken several months in, and appears just as solid as the day I put it in. Pros: Very robust Very strong Easy to adjust Hasn’t broke yet Cons: Instructions were a bit confusing. Specifically, the direction to turn knobs for adjustments were wrong I had to remount the thing twice on each door, because the directions weren’t really designed for residential doors

This is a great product. Great price. Highly recommend!

There are installation videos on you tube. Somehow I lost the template...or it was never in the box so that made the install more challenging. Its works well except not enough velocity to shut our side exterior door to our garage completely or 100% of the time. I think it might be our door handle latch impacting (I still need to make some adjustments) Regardless, it still keeps our side door from flying open when windy or being left open enough for the dog to get out or critters to come in

Template with 3" drop is wrong. Need another 0.5" to clear the elbow. It scratches my door frame badly, despite removing a washer and filing down the tip of the screw. Should have listened to the other reviewers before jumping into the installation! Nice product, bad instructions.

Very brief and contradictory installation instructions. Says preset to size 2 on one side of the instructions and size 3 on the other (it makes a big difference!). The dimensions on the installation drawing are different than the template and there is no suggested size for the pilot holes for the unusual screws. There was no customer service contact info. to resolve these issues either (however, I now see that the Amazon vendor profile lists a number. I haven't tried phoning them because I only found it later - why not include it with the product). If you're a handyman be prepared to scratch your head! However, once installed the product works well and is easy to adjust.
