Hi. The straps are not removable. They are attached and wrap over and around the foot and ankle (figure 8) pattern.

Are you able to wear shoes with it on

Yes, but not shoes that are tight to begin with. I wear 7.5 and 8 shoes but I would wear the size 8 with brace. Best wishes.
