How much abuse have you put it through (without breaking it)?

Haven’t necessarily beat on it super rough like wood chopping but keep it as my EDC. For about 4 months of running Boy Scouts down in Key West while working on a sailing ship it got put through its paces. Salt water, salty air, etc all while they used it for cutting fishing lines, ropes, killing fish on a steel deck, cutting squid and other bait, etc daily (don’t worry they cleaned it between uses haha)
While knife got slightly dull after this rough daily use for months and a few springs exhibited light surface rust (from salt water use) the knife still performed and held up well. The Blade never got rusted out or chipped. Once I got home to Texas I shipped it back to Benchmade and they installed new hardware, sharpened the blade, and basically revamped the knife as part of their Lifetime Warranty.
The Aluminum scales on the knife take beats and blows very well and never corroded; They’re durable and sturdy as heck. The knife itself never got loose or wobbly over the 2-3 years I’ve owned it, still opens like its new. Still my daily EDC knife with an amazing lifetime warranty and always amazing customer service from Benchmade. Wouldn’t hesitate to say this model the 940 is one of Benchmades longest running models and their best designs in my opinion.
Just remember if you get it with a serrated edge Benchmade can’t sharpen them, just the flat part. I opted for the smooth Blade and it cuts like butter and just keeps working. Cut your sandwich, turn a screw, adjust a gun sight, cut rope, cut lines, shave wood, fight baddies, defense knife, etc this knife does it all for me so far. :)

Question 2

is the knife easy to take apart and clean

I dont know why you would disassemble it, other than a grind in the pivot or something, but no they are fairly simple to take apart and rescale or clean. Hardest part for me is getting the pivot back in at times, but leaving a bit through the pivot hole will not only assist in the pivot, but also will keep the washers and blade in place

Do the body screws make direct contact with the aluminum scales, or screw into threaded steel inserts?

Directly into threaded holes in the aluminum scales.  No steel inserts.

Question 4

why can’t this item be shipped to NY all of a sudden? Only recently started showing that message. It's not assisted and it's not a flipper...

It is consider a flipper because you can swing the blade open by centrifugal force through axis lock or manipulation of the knife thumb stud. I would guess it is the above, blade length, or some new restrictive law though. May be an Amazon policy also? Maybe check with another dealer source to see if the restriction is the same? Good luck
