Pawz Away Mini Pet Barrier with Collar, Indoor/Outdoor

Our dogs had gotten into the habit of laying across the back edge of our sofa. It was their favorite place to be, but when we purchased a new sofa, we knew we had to try to break that habit. We already had an invisible fence system, so both dogs are familiar with shock collars and what the warning beeps mean. While this is a different system, we were optimistic that it would work for our dogs. I purchased two of the Pawz Away collars with the mini discs, the thought being that we would put one disk on the floor on either end of the sofa. I was concerned about the battery life, having read several reviews where people said they didn't last, but I figured I'd give it a try and could always return them if it didn't work out. I'm happy to say that it not only worked out, but it worked out even better than I had hoped. That said, there were a few things that we learned as we went along. Firstly, the collar. As I mentioned, we already use an invisible fence so our dogs already have a collar with a transmitter. I really didn't want a second collar with another transmitter, so we ended up cutting two holes in each new collar, and moving the invisible fence transmitter onto the new collars. So now we have two transmitters on each collar. Secondly, batteries. We haven't had a problem with the batteries. We've had them almost a month now, and they are still going strong. I leave the discs powered on all the time (because frankly, I was having trouble remembering to turn them on and off each morning and night) but I do turn the collars off every night when I take them off the dogs. I just keep the key nearby and it takes about 2 seconds to turn each one off. No big deal. I turn it back on again in the morning when I put the collars back on. Mind you, our dogs sleep in kennels each night, so if yours don't you might not be able to do this. So far, I haven't had to replace any of the batteries. I also suspect that each dog's temperament probably has a lot to do with battery life. Both of our dogs tend to be overly cautious. It only takes one shock and you'd be hard pressed to get them to go near the area again. So while I'm a little disappointed that our dogs still won't go near the couch (I'd love for them to sit nearby when *I'm* on the couch) I'm hoping that will come with time. If your dog is less timid, they may run the batteries out sooner with repeated tries at the spot you're trying to keep them out of. Thirdly, disk placement. I originally placed the disk on the floor under the sofa. I turned the dial all the way down because I didn't want the dogs getting shocked when walking behind the sofa, just on top of it. Well, this *sort of* worked. I found that they were still able to get up on the couch, and then sometimes it would shock them and sometimes it wouldn't. What actually ended up working better was putting the disc under the bottom seat cushion. At first I was worried that doing so would mean I couldn't sit on the sofa without accidentally pushing the buttons and adjusting the range, but that's not the case at all. No matter how many times we've sat on the couch, the range hasn't changed. Our sofa is leather and has thick cushions, so your experience might be different, depending on what material your sofa is made from and how thick your cushions are. And finally, since the dogs haven't tried to get back on the sofa in weeks, I went ahead and moved one of the discs to another problem area: a chair on our back porch that the dogs used to climb up on to look through the kitchen window. Cute, but not so cute when their paws are muddy! I put the disk under the cushion and I did see one of our dogs try it ONCE. She hasn't tried it since then. I haven't seen the other dog try, but that doesn't mean she didn't. A few last thoughts on an already overly long review...I think our success in using this system is due in large part to the fact that, as I've mentioned, we already have an invisible fence. If you have one, you know that there is a lot of training involved in getting your dog to learn what the beep means, and how far they can go without getting shocked. You wouldn't just set it up and turn the dog loose to figure it out on their own. I think the same is true with this system. There is probably a learning curve, so be patient with your pet if they aren't used to it. Also, while the system works PERFECTLY for what we purchased it for, I read some reviews from people who were disappointed that it wasn't keeping their pets from going through a door threshold, for example, or a dog door. I don't think this is the product for that. It's great if your'e trying to keep your pet from setting up camp in a particular spot (like the sofa) but if you're trying to stop them from *moving through* an area, I think it would only be an exercise in futility. Especially if they move quickly. By the time the shock triggers, they've probably already moved through the area you want them to stay out of. How confusing for the pet! And lastly, I read a lot of reviews from people who had trouble with the cap falling apart after replacing the batteries. Since I haven't had to replace the batteries yet, I'll come back and update my review if I have the same problem.

I bought two of these hoping I could use them to teach my dogs a few places I'd like them to avoid (my rose bush that they trample or trying to prevent my giant schnauzer from sampling food on the table since he is at the perfect height to do just that). I have a wireless fence system by petsafe that I use for both of them so I had high hopes that this would work just as well. I assumed it would give them a surprising shock and they would back off in surprise like they did with the fencing system that worked so wonderfully... Well obviously it did NOT work like that. I removed all other collars and shut off my other fence system. I followed all directions and I could see the collar was working but whatever shock it puts off must be a joke!! My dog was sniffing and touching the white disc so he was definitely close enough to it and he wasn't bothered AT ALL!!! Over and over again, it wasn't doing anything. I even raised it up on a pole to be closer to his collar level...I tried flipping it side ways, all different ways. Nothing worked. Now let me be clear. The collar was "working". It's not that it wasn't working, it just must be the most pathetic shock ever. My dogs are not stubborn either, they are very sensitive to the petsafe wireless fence system I use. With those collars set on the lowest shock level possible they will run and squeal if they accidentally go out of their bounds. They learned VERY quickly with that and I was so hoping this system would be just as effective in but it's not. I read some bad reviews but I also read some good. I thought because my dogs were sensitive to even mild shocks that this would work for me...it didn't and I totally wasted $90 (I bought 2). I wouldn't even give it away because it simply does not work.

Reason for getting this is to train my stud cat (British shorthair) to not PEE / SPRAY on my COUCH. He is off limits of my room until I get more range devices so he won’t mark on my bed when I’m laying there as he tend to do that when my lady cats are sleeping with me. I will be ordering a few more range devices so it can train him not to go here and there. He will even mark his territory right near me when it comes to marking his territory. The cons of breeding, is the marking. I’ve tried so many spray brands for “no marking” “no spraying” it doesn’t work lol. This collar does though… I put the range device on my coffee table which is right center of my couch. The couch he loves to mark his territory on in my loft. The moment he goes near it a little noise happens and when he doesn’t leave he gets shocked and runs away. Sometimes he will just runs when he hears one beep. My first time using this, I kept the range device by the couch, all night. I woke up to check the couch to see if there was a marking stain / puddle, nope! It actually works. Will be getting more range devices for other “places” he likes. I will only keep the collar on him when I’m leaving the house or when I’m sleeping as those times when i am not present is when he tends to do the marking. This is just to train him to not do what he has been doing. I’m a ethical breeder, sometimes you need a little extra help to train your animals to not do bad habits, this will help, but also don’t leave the collar on for so long, use it as a training tool. This collar helps me with my cleaning daily duties as I don’t have to clean up too much marking spots as the collar will prevent him to mark my beloved things. Maybe some people didn’t take enough time to figure out this or know how to even turn it on for the 3.9 rating. I read the whole manual, I even tested it on my hand before putting the collar on him. It works, just take your time reading the manual and doing the collar adjustment. For me I had to use the small collar as this is for my cat. Make sure the petsmart collar is turn on, On ( - line).

We have been using this for several months now and it has worked great for our cat. We use this to keep our cat from jumping on the kitchen counters, dining table, and dressers. I have followed the troubleshooting directions when it didn’t seem to be working and it has fixed the problem every time. It goes through batteries quickly, especially if the transmitter is not turned off when not in use. As the batteries die the range will shorten. If it seems to be working inconsistently, it usually means the collar has become loose and needs to be readjusted. The batteries in the collar have lasted a long time. You will still hear the beeping when the collar batteries are almost dead but it stops producing a shock. Once our cat feels a shock from the collar, he stays away from the area, usually for weeks. He knows as soon as he starts hearing the beep to get away from it. Being a cat, he will eventually try again so I definitely think this is worth the money. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I feel the battery life of the transmitter is too short and for what it is the price is high, in my opinion.

The product seems well made. Upon opening the box, it had no shrink wrap and I thought it might have been opened. But the carboard box flaps are sealed with glue. So much plastic shrink wrap ends up in the trash nowadays I applaud the company for using environmentally responsible and recyclable packaging. Unfortunately, this is not going to work for our application. The instructions say to not leave the collar on for more than 12 hours and to adjust or reposition it every 2 hours. We travel a couple of times a month and have a pet sitter that comes for only 30 minutes a day. So, unfortunately, we are returning the product. We did not see that information in the product description. The device seems well thought out and I also applaud the company for the wear-time warnings and respect for the safety of our pets. Our application is for a cat and intermittent use and training might work better with dogs.

I bought this product as a way to train my dog while I'm away at work. I need to correct any bad behavior that occurs only when I'm not home, or else my landlord won't allow my dog to stay. I chose this product because I couldn't install an electric fence. On the first day, which happened to be a weekend, the product worked perfectly and was much easier to install than an electric fence. Unfortunately, when I came back from work the next day, I found out that the collar was broken. I had my doubts about the collar's durability from the moment I opened the box, but I didn't expect it to break after just a few days. I tried to buy a new collar from a different brand, but I couldn't find one that fits the narrow slots on the receiver. The receiver can't fit on any collar because it has to be threaded on, and most collars are sewn together at both ends. The poor quality of the collar is enough for me to avoid buying any more of these products and wish I had gone with a different brand. The entire system is useless without a working collar. While the product worked well on the first day, I can't recommend it because the collar, which is the simplest and cheapest part of the system, failed so quickly.

My cat (Binx) and dog (Boscoe) are best buds. While amazing, that can also lead to problems. My dog has free access to the yard through a dog door. He can come and go as he pleases. Binx loves Boscoe. Binx also loves going outside with Boscoe. Binx has figured out how to use the dog door. Enter the many phases of keeping the cat in. Phase 1: Change the dog door. We got a RFID enabled dog door. Only he who wears the collar can get out. Well... not when you have a dog and cat that are in cahoots together. Let's set the stage. Boscoe gets within range of the door, the door unlocks. He looks around to see if Binx is near. He lets the cat through the door then walks out himself. Success! They frolic around the yard until the cat becomes bored and runs off. Pets 1: Humans 0. Phase 2: Decreased the dog door range. The stage is set again. Binx meows that he's ready to be rampant outside. Boscoe comes by and gets super close to the door. Click! It opens and they walk through the door together, the cat slyly fitting perfectly under the large dog. Success! They frolic around the yard until the cat becomes bored and runs off. Pets 2: Humans 0. Phase 3: Build a catio and motion activated cameras. The stage is set again. Binx and Boscoe are at the ready. An alert is triggered. The humans come running to the door. The cat escapes but is quickly brought back in. Binx goes into his new fancy catio and experiences a safe outdoor space. He motions to Boscoe. The cat goes inside and waits at the dog door. Boscoe unlocks the door and waits for Binx to exit. They frolic around the yard until the cat becomes bored and runs off. Pets 3: Humans 0. Phase 4: Enter PetSafe Pawz Away Pet Barriers. The cats collar is replaced with a new fancy one. A little larger but still comfortable. Not too tight, not too loose. He accepts his new accessory. A small puck is placed in front of the dog door. Binx and Boscoe plan their escape. Boscoe unlocks the door and steps through, waiting for Binx to make his exit. Binx runs for it, knowing that at any moment the humans could appear. Beep beep beep! Binx stops. What is that beeping? He misses his window to escape. The door has relocked. He goes out the catio and calls to Boscoe to open the door. The door is unlocked and the coast is clear. Binx runs for the door, ignores the beeps. Zap. Binx gets a light zap, like a rubber band hitting the skin. Failure! The humans have finally won. The beeps are enough to keep the kingdom at peace with the snap of the rubber band to remind us that the catio is the place to be. Phase 5: Order more PetSafe Pawz Away Pet Barriers & make the catio more amazing The humans have placed pucks on countertops but added fun and exciting additions to the catio and house. A bird feeder sits outside the catio and provides a cinematic experience. Shelves cover the walls for aerial zoomies. Snuggles increase exponentially as the stress of running outside have positively impacted the entire family. I test the zap on myself several times... and maybe an unaware spouse too. :) It's enough to startle you but feels like a rubber band snap. The collar isn't huge and Binx has no issues wearing it. It didn't have to be super tight and his fur is pretty thick. It gets taken off at night. We have noticed the cat is super affectionate now. He gets taken on walks (yes, we are the crazy people that take our cat for leashed walks) and has a nice catio with a cat door he goes in and out. The collar hasn't gotten stuck on anything (including the cat door which is rather small). Every morning, he jumps on his perch and waits for his collar to be put on and then gets some wet food. It's become a regular part of his routine and we absolutely love it.

Instructions claim it will emit an elliptical pattern up to 5 feet but mine only works up to 12 inches and that's intermittent at best. And there's truly no pattern. I've read the instructions several times, tried every possible location and position. It's not near metal or any other item that would interfere with the signal. Has all brand new batteries and no matter what I do it just won't reach more than 12 inches except ONCE I got it to react at 24 inches. There are actually two points on the transmitter that are so dead that I can move the receiving collar right up to the unit with no response at all and I have the transmitter cranked as high as it will go. I've used other brands of invisible / electronic barriers so I am experienced but they require wires. I was hoping to avoid wires all over my kitchen thus why I tried this unit but unfortunately I will be lucky if it protects the top of the stove only or perhaps I can place it on top of the trash can but I seriously think it won't protect my garbage because it is in a metal can. It's a shame that I found reviews recommending this item. I do believe now those reviews were definitely bogus. I do NOT recommend this item to any one. I have to decide now do I return it or use it to protect one small 12-24" spot on the counter.

On a acheté se produit a contre cœur mais très efficace. On a 2 chats et le mâle a un sérieux problème avec la nourriture. Il vole la bouffe de ma femelle. On a tout essayé. La Machine avec micro puce, manger dans une autre pièce, mais elle mange pas elle fais de l'angoisse. Placer sa machine dans un cube avec tunnel pour bloqué l'accès au mâle mais réussi toujours car les machine a micro puce c'est une bonne idée mais elle se referme trop lentement et il avait toujours le temps de rentrer et de retenir la porte et manger sa nourriture. Alors c'étais notre dernier espoirs et WOW miracle enfin. Il ne s'approche plus du tout de sa nourriture et il a compris en 2 jours même lorsqu'il ne porte pas le collier il n'ose pas s'approcher. Oui sa fais une décharge électrique et augmente après 6 bips et ainsi de suite. On a essayé et sa fait quand même mal et ceux qui dise une légère vibrations je trouve pas. J'étais contre ce genre de dispositif mais on ne savais plus quoi essayée et enfin elle peut manger a son rythme car elle se régule, tandis que le mâle lui englouti tout d'un coup. Je recommande en dernier recours. Mais il faut vraiment bien le serrée sinon sa ne fonctionnera pas et on a du lui couper un peu le poil pour que sa fonctionne et le colliers n'a pas du tout l'air de le déranger et il n'a pas changer d'attitude s'amuse normalement. Juste que quand il vois la petite rondelle il s'éloigne avec ou sans collier.

Funciona excelentemente bien, compre este producto por que mi perra se metia a la arena de los gatos a comersela, no habia ninguna manera de hacerla entender que no debia hacerlo y como es del tamaño de un gato tampoco habia manera de restringirle el paso a los areneros, los regaños se le olvidaban al dia siguiente, pero con este collar ahora evita esa zona, aunque cabe mencionar que sabe perfectamente cuando no trae el collar, asi que si se nos olvidara ponerselo y se queda sola lo vuelve a hacer. Lo unico que he notado es que si se acerca a la zona restringida no da un beep de aviso como se supondria o eso habia yo entendido de su funcionamiento, el beep va junto con el toque desde que entra a la zona restringida, pero de cualquier manera funciona super bien, solo hicieron falta 2 toques y no se ha vuelto a acercar a la zona desde que uso la barrera.

I am hopefully going to be able to return this, I tried it for a couple of days and it's useless at deterring my cat from counters, I even put it as tight as possible without choking my cat to death, he seems to just deal with the shock like i have a picture of him with it on sitting on the counter next to the transmitter with a look of victory.

Très satisfaite. Nous avons 2 chats qui montent sur le comptoir de cuisine quand nous ne sommes pas là, nous avons acheté 2 unités et 2 colliers et ça fonctionne. Ils n'osent même plus s'approcher des comptoirs, ils savent que lorsque le BIP sonne ils doivent reculer s'ils ne veulent pas recevoir une petite décharge.
