Is the retractable cord 8' as listed in the description or 10' as mentioned in a number of the reviews?

The "deluxe" $100 iron has a retractable cord, 8' The "standard" $60 iron has a non-retractable, 10' There are other differences.

Does it shut off automatically

Yes. If the iron is on and it is laid down it will shut off after 60 seconds. If the iron is on and it's vertical it will shut off after 30 minutes.

Experience using this iron without steam, as a dry iron?

Yes I have. It irons like a regular iron. It has a setting from your adjustable steam lever to turn it to Dry. I Love this iron both on steam and dry. Hope this helps. 😊

Does the retractable cord work well?

I am sorry, I purchased the non retractable model as the cord is longer and I have seen broken retractable cords in other brands. PS I am very happy with this iron.
