If you think the Vikings were just savage brutes who stole and killed, youโre missing out on a rich and complex history. Keep reading to find out more about this compelling civilization. Theyโre widely known as raiders, pirates, invaders, and savages, but despite their fearsome reputation (or perhaps because of it), Vikings continue to fascinate us today. This complex society has inspired films, history books, romance novels, and even comics. From Hagar the Horrible to the Vikings series, the world is still enthralled by the Viking Age. And itโs not hard to see why. They were brave, rebellious, and fierce fighters โ plus, based on Hollywoodโs portrayals, they were quite good-looking. But thatโs not all they were. While media highlights their violence and toughness, thereโs more to the Viking culture than just conquering lands. The Vikings were not just warriors but also traders, explorers, and lawmakers โ and many of their influences are still felt in the modern world. Unfortunately, these aspects are often overlooked because theyโre not as exciting as swordfights. If youโre looking for the truth behind the legends and the movies, this thoroughly researched account is just for you. In Uncovering Vikings History , youโll find out just what the Vikings were capable ofโฆ and appreciate these trailblazing seafarers even more. Here is just a fraction of what you will discover inside: An inside look into the lifestyle, beliefs, and glory days of these Scandinavian sea warriors The truth behind Hollywoodโs fanciful depictions of Vikings โ what Vikings really looked like based on archeological evidence Why the Vikingsโ owed a lot of their success to their daily diet โ and the surprising thing they have in common with todayโs bodybuilders Ragnar Lothbrok , Erik the Red , Cnut the Great , and other notable Vikings, including one who converted to Christianity as a negotiation tactic How the Vikings inspired the modern-day soap opera โ plus other astounding cultural contributions you wouldnโt expect from a bunch of so-called barbarians How the Vikings went from worshipping Thor and the other Norse gods to revering the one God of Christianity โ all without violent conflict The historic battle that ended the era of the Vikings and gave rise to a new group of conquerors And much more. You may have a stereotype of a Viking ingrained in your mind โ one of pillaging, killing, and looting. But thereโs much more to this fascinating group than brute force and violence. Get to know the Vikings beyond the tales of terror and destruction. Youโll be surprised at what you will discover. Review: Fun and interesting! - The author is clearly very educated in Viking history, which really made this so fun to read and incredibly interesting. This was a great resource as well. I was fascinated learning about how Vikings differed in appearance from us and their diets. Very interesting. I enjoyed learning about their longhouses and could help but draw comparisons between them and Native Americans in the pacific northwest. I also enjoyed learning about the legendary vikings. This was well done. I'll be reading it again. Review: Vikings, baby! History, who, where, how? So awesome!!! - Always been fascinated. This book about Vikings is detailed, historical, interesting and well-written. A total blast to read if you've ever been intrigued by... V I K I N G S ! ! ! Recommend.

A fun read on Viking history and culture
Uncovering Vikings is a well written, interesting exploration of Viking history, culture, social structure, building skills, craftsmanship and more. Iโm a big fan of the various Viking television series and have often wondered though what life was like in the Viking culture. This book gave me a good start. I wouldโve have liked to have seen sample drawings of the artwork in the art periods described and illustrations of Viking clothing. I very much enjoyed the explanation of the shipbuilding process and would have enjoyed illustrations on that as well. If the author ever publishes an update of this book, I recommend those additions. Overall a fun book.

Brilliant
Wonderful writing about a fascinating topic. I have actually learned quite alot about these ancient people. Just one criticism- I would have like to see the phonetic spelling and sounds of some of the words in order to learn to properly pronounce them and from a linguistic point of view it would have been interesting to see how their language effected the English we speak today

Basic Viking history and lore!
This small book is an east, quick read and a good start to understanding basic Viking history and lore. The authors writes in such a way the material is quickly understood. It is all outlined and categorized to make learning easier as well. I did find the author''s writing style to be redundant often using the same descriptors over and over.

Great Book!!
Such a great initial guide into viking history. Its not too long and not too short, however it talks in detail about all the viking culture and history. Its an easy and enjoyable read and the authorโs way of writing is different to all the other ones Iโve read. Cant wait to read the other books from this guy.

A surprisingly good fan book
A suprisingly good book: well written, well edited and formatted, with no spelling or typographic mistakes. The author is not a scholar, or he would at least have heard that the term Viking is probably derived from "Vik," the historical name for the area near today's Oslo. Some sections are uninformative or not clear, for example the descriptions of Viking art--either clearer descriptions (specifically, what art objects were produced in those styles, for example?) or some illustrations may be useful. But there are fun sections on Viking diet, living in a long house and personal hygiene habits. This is really a "fan book": if you are into Vikings and are glad to talk about them, you will enjoy this. If you prefer something more scholarly and still fun to read, I recommend Torre Skeie's "The Wolf Age" or Lars Brownworth "The Sea Wolves."

I learned a lot and really enjoyed it.
I really should have known or remembered more about Viking life as I'm a British citizen. The coming together of the Vikings and Christians is one of the most important things that ever happened on this island. I am going to start watching things to do with Viking history now as this book has made me more curious about this civilization. In some ways, they were very advanced and in some ways they were barbaric, they are certainly interesting people in the modern person's eyes. Child support, wealthy women, and arranged marriages on one hand, on the other hand, human sacrifices and a possibility of being killed for infidelity. When you add the Gods, Dragons, and Giant Wolves to the mix of religion and myth it's a very interesting and tough world they live in. Really enjoyed this.

It was ok
Bought this book for my adult son for Christmas. I thought it was bigger but that's my fault. There are no images inside just plain text. I returned it for Norse Mythology by Kelsey Fuller-Shafer which my son loved.
