Nina Ottosson Dog Brick Dog Toy Treat Puzzle, 12.8"

First off, this is NOT a toy. It is a puzzle. It should be placed on the floor with your dog when its time time to work on it, and then picked up when done. Then it will not be chewed on! Do not leave them alone with it. It should be interactive. Spend the time with your dog to teach and praise. They are happy to see you proud of them when work through the puzzle and figure it out. I have a 75lb, 9 yr old pitbull. She enjoys this puzzle. She definitely gets excited when I tell her it's "puzzle time". I took the time to show her how each piece moves and showed her where the treats were hiding. So she learned how to do it. It's tricky for them in the beginning (which is a good thing, and why it's a level 2 puzzle) - you can't really slide the red boxes until you move the white bones. I took the suggestion another reviewer posted and put hair ties through the boned to make it easier for my dog to remove them. We started first with ONLY the white bones. Showed my dog how to get to the treats. Then removed the white bones and did the same thing with only the red boxes. Eventually we did the puzzle with all off the pieces at the start. It doesn't take an extremely long time to complete the puzzle. But it does take time for the dog to think/remember how to move the pieces to get to the treats. Removing the white bones is challenging and so is opening the red boxes. The red boxes can pop out, so after she learned the puzzle, I flipped some of the red boxes in the other direction so they don't all open the same way from the same side. We do the puzzle a couple times a day. I use her dog food vs. treats. I also wash it in the sink. I have taken all the parts off and soaked and rinsed them. Have had no issues with quality. It has been such a great experience that I am planning to get another puzzle for her.

At 14 years old, the VIP (very important papillon) has been a bit slower when he walks, but still as inquisitive as ever. I was hesitant in getting him a puzzle thinking he wouldn’t be interested or wouldn’t “get it”, but it ended up being one of the best treats I could get him. The Nina Ottosson Dog Brick is a well made and apparently a very fascinating toy for my dog to play with. I initially hid small pieces of chicken in the toy and he had no clue how to get the pieces out. After giving him the toy without the white bones in place, he slowly figured out how to open the boxes with his nose and found that some of the boxes slide, revealing the treats underneath. I then upped the difficulty and added one bone at a time, hoping he would figure out how to move it - within a day or two, he mastered one bone and within another day he was able to move all four bones without too much trouble. I alternate the food foraging toys he gets each day and we’ve found that although he knows how to solve the puzzle now, he’s still very interested in it and looks forward to moving the pieces to get the treats inside. The puzzle is well made, although the pieces aren’t durable enough to handle chewing. The pieces are light enough for small dogs to maneuver however, and everything can be easily washed if you put wet or oily treats inside. Overall, if you’re looking to keep your dog engaged and want to give him a little challenge when getting his meals, this is a great toy to consider.

I originally bought one not knowing if my dogs would be interested in this. But because they loved it and it was great enrichment for them I decided to buy another one. I was a bit disappointed with the second one only because as I was washing it I noticed signs that it had been previously used and repackaged. I don’t have a problem with buying second hand items, but I wish I had at least known it was going to be second hand/that I was making the choice to buy second hand instead of realizing it on my own when I was expecting it to be new like the first one. I have the pictures up there, I originally thought the food crumbs were from the red plastic doors, until I got to one spot of food that actually stained the plastic. I didn’t return it because the product still works as described and I was able to wash it, the only thing left being the stain. Aside from this it’s not a bad product. It’s great because it keeps my dogs busy, they took longer the first day, but each time they used it they got faster at it. However, each time they finish the red doors are all over the floor, I’m not sure if this is because like others say the doors pop off too easily or if it’s because they are larger dogs and this product was designed for small to medium sized dogs. I used it around 5 times and it’s in good condition because I take it away right after they finish. The one time I didn’t one of my dogs chewed one of the doors but luckily they also sell just the doors. Pros: stimulating for dogs/keeps them busy and lets them keep sniffing, doors are detachable (can buy more if chewed up), not too difficult to wash. Cons: slip resistant bottoms only somewhat work, if you don’t attach the doors correctly they pop off very easily.

My small dog (11 pounds) adores this puzzle! It’s good for treats, but also works great as a “slow feeder” for a little guy who otherwise scarfs his food too fast! Although it would be nice if the lids of the “boxes” didn’t come off so easily, it is great that they DO snap off if opened too wide instead of breaking, and they’re easy to snap back into the “hinges” again.

Love this for my Frenchie! She’s not the most patient (but very treat focused), and she figured out the red puzzle pieces pretty quickly, while the white ones add a level of difficulty making this a versatile dog puzzle that will likely remain interesting and stimulating for a long time. Recommended!

I’ve been using this puzzle since my dog was a puppy (she's 3 now), and while it has a lot of positive aspects, there are a few things that could be improved. Pros: Slows Down Mealtime: This puzzle is perfect for slowing down my dog while she eats. Instead of inhaling her food in seconds, it makes her work for her treats, which is great for digestion and mental stimulation. Keeps My Dog Entertained: My dog really enjoys solving this puzzle. It keeps her engaged for a good while, and I love that it provides a healthy outlet for her energy and curiosity. She has to figure out how to lift flaps and slide pieces to get to the food. Cons: The White "Bone" Pieces Are a Mess: I didn’t like how the little white bone-shaped pieces keep falling out of the puzzle. They just go everywhere, and after a few uses, I decided to throw them out entirely. It was more hassle than it was worth to keep them. Flaps Are Easy for My Dog to Pull Off: My dog quickly figured out how to pull off the top flaps that cover the treat compartments. While I can still use the puzzle without the flaps, it was frustrating at times when she would easily rip them off, especially during the early stages of using it. Durability Issues with Chewing: When my dog was a puppy, she chewed one of the puzzle pieces, which caused a little bit of damage. While you can still use everything, I wasn’t thrilled about the chewing. So, if you have a dog prone to chewing, be cautious about leaving them unattended with this puzzle. Takes a While to Dry: It’s great that this puzzle is dishwasher-safe, but it does take quite a while to dry completely, especially in the compartments where the treats go. You’ll need to let it sit for a bit before using it again, which is a little inconvenient when you’re in a hurry. Overall Thoughts: The Outward Hound Nina Ottosson Dog Brick Puzzle has definitely earned its place in my dog’s enrichment rotation. It’s fantastic for slowing down mealtime and providing her with some mental stimulation, which is especially important for high-energy dogs. However, the white bone pieces were a hassle, and the flaps didn’t hold up well for my dog. Still, it’s a fun and useful puzzle overall, and I’ll continue to use it in the mix with her other toys.

I never expected this toy to be such a big hit with both my dogs, but it is! My girl dog (bulldog/ black lab mix) is about 6 years old and doesn't like to do anything that requires any "effort". I've tried those Kong balls that you put treats in that they knock around with their nose and paws to get the treats to fall out... my boy dog (boxer/pit mix) loved it so I knew he would love this toy too! My girl dog however, would just sniff it and then howl at you until you got sick of hearing her and dumped the treats out for her! This toy however, my girl dog got very excited about! So much so that she figured out how to use it. It takes her a good bit longer than my boy, and she sometimes likes to take breaks in-between tries, but she gets excited every time I pull this game out. Definite win! In the video I've attached, it may look like they're cuddling but this is actually how we have to hold down my boy dog while we give the girl a turn on this toy. He gets SO excited and loves this game so much we literally have to hold him back while his sister gets a turn! (He's typically great with commands, but we are definitely going to have to practice more to get him to control himself and his excitement with this toy.) As for the toy itself; you need to supervise your pet! It is not chew proof! It is made of sturdy hard plastic that holds up well, but if left alone with it I have no doubt my dogs will chew it to shreds. That is not however what this toy is about! It's about stimulating your pet. My boy dog is so high energy, oftentimes is hard to wear him out physically. So, I'll pull a game like this out for him to play with a couple of times and the mental stimulation will wear him out faster than anything physical could! Love toys like these!

My dog LOVES this toy! He can't wait to play and find all of the hidden treats. Medium difficulty and I will buy the next level up next time.

My dog really really enjoys this. It is the right balance of fun and engagement without being frustrating (my dog gives up on the Kong wobbler but goes all the way to finish this puzzle). I understand the negative reviews here about choking hazards, plastic pieces breaking up, the toy cannot be left unsupervised etc... but it is unfair to rate this puzzle in that way. You ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO supervise this puzzle like a hawk and teach your dog the main objective of the game, which is to get the treats, not chew up the loose pieces. On my dog’s first try, he flipped the loose bone and took off with it immediately. We took the loose piece away and led him back to the puzzle. On the second try, he snapped the red caps and started chewing on it. We immediately intervened and brought his attention back to the puzzle. Now he gets, but we still standby to remove any loose pieces so his attention doesn’t wander to them. This is a 5 star toy if you know how to direct you dog the right way. It needs constant supervision. The loose pieces have to be removed immediately once they have served their purposes. It makes my dog’s meals super fun.

This is a great item to entertain your furry friend. After showing him how to use it, It only takes my dog about 3 minutes to complete it, but he loves it. He gets excited every time I bring it out. A few of the pieces are scratched or dented from his teeth, but that's to be expected. He usually end up pulling the lids right off in his attempt to get to the snack beneath, but it's good they pop off so as not to break. Also makes cleaning easier. I use solid treats in the toy so cleaning is easier. I imagine peanut butter or something would be a bit harder to clean out, but I just put some soap on it and let it soak for a couple minutes then rinse it. Doesn't usually require any scrubbing. Small enough that it stores nicely. Best of all, it helps with some of my dogs energy and he enjoys using it. Will likely upgrade to the next difficulty level at some point.
