Q: I can't figure out how to adjust the gas valve. Does the half-circle part lift up?

Yes the half circle ring lifts up and then you can adjust flame up or down

Q: Do I need to remove anything from the lighter in order to fill with butane?

hello, when you use this lighter for the first time, you should push filling hole on the bottom of lighter with a screwdriver to exhaust the air inside. More details for refilling please click the video.

I purchased the 2 pack and they came individually wrapped in one box. These are very solid and simple torch lighter's!

Q: You make a big deal about the groove in the lid, what is that for?

Yeah I'm not sure it's wise to put a lit cigar on top of a gas lighter , also unless you balance the cigar evenly it won't rest on it correctly. I won't be using it to hold my cigar's!
