My first dip into fantasy aside from the little HP reading I did as a child. And what a joy this book was. The cover might speak of a story of strength and finding meaning but I was honestly most taken aback by how funny a read it was too. All-round wholesome and a brilliant pick for whoever's reading this.

A book that finally kept me hooked, made me laugh, cry and dance with joy. It was very well written and all the kids were so damn cute.

It follows Linus Baker, a man living the same grey routine day after day, until a quiet shift nudges him toward actually living instead of merely existing. Watching Linus step out of his rigid world and slowly open his heart was so rewarding. The children are quirky in the most natural, grounded way — nothing feels exaggerated for effect — and the way he bonds with them feels deeply human. Arthur and Zoe add their own gentle warmth to the story, rounding out this beautifully found family. It’s soft, whimsical, comforting, and sincere. A story about choosing joy, embracing who you are, and letting yourself build a life that finally feels like home. A wonderful, heart-refreshing read.

Amazing quality 😁 Worth it

One of the best book on my shelf. Best for readers looking cozy family themed setup with a sparkle of magic. The story telling is great and creates a hook in your mind for what's next going to come. It's definitely a page turner and I loved reading it, and also planning to reread. The quality of the book was great, no damage and clear prints. The House in the Cerulean Sea is a fantasy novel. It’s set in the 50s, though the author never mentions the time period, the music clearly reflects it. It’s the tale of Linus Baker, a middle-aged bureaucrat who has spent his entire career toiling for DICOMY (Department of Magical Youth). DICOMY is in theory, in charge of protecting kids who have magical powers. Linus is sent on investigation of an orphanage in an isolated island. In the island, Linus meets six kids, their master and their protector. The six kids are – Talia the garden gnome, Chauncey the tentacle ‘monster’, Sal the were-Pomeranian, Theodore the Wyvern, Phee the forest sprite and Lucy the son of Satan. The story is simple and well narrated with emotions riding high in most of the pages. Klune was queer himself and must have known how it feels to be different from others in the society and being rejected by people. Human beings are not only scared of the unknown, but also scared to understand anyone who doesn’t fit into their mental picture of a human being. These kids were like most other children, enthusiastic, possessive, funny, curious, playful but since they dint fit in the ideal definition of a child, they were mentally abused. They were made to believe that they were bad, they were monsters. Acceptance level in human beings is very low. The most beautiful lines in the novel are “A home isnt always the house we live in. It’s also the people we choose to surround ourselves with.” Home is where you find love. The love can be from your partner or your friend or your family or someone else. Home is where you can be yourself and no one will judge you. Home is where no one will try to dictate terms to you rather they will be with you and will support you no matter what. In the story Linus Baker finds his home in Arthur, the six children and Zoe, the sprite. Arthur Parnassus, the master of the orphanage will remind one of their father. Quietly sacrificing, protecting, encouraging and loving their kid. Arthur had a bitter experience in his childhood but that dint make him bitter, that made him more determined to ensure that no one is treated the way he was treated. Overall it’s a fantastic read and a small note to the emotional readers out there, please sit with a few tissue papers because in different pages of the book, some happy tears are bound to fill your eyes.

It's a delightful book! There are so many good things about it that it's hard to know where to begin. This isn't an action-packed fantasy book, and it doesn't aim to be one. It's a fantasy story about a lonely bureaucrat from a children's protection department (well, magical children) who goes to investigate an orphanage and discovers much more than just an orphanage. The environment is endearing, the characters are nicely described, and the story flows smoothly with good pacing and wonderful writing. I loved Linus and how he is totally believable—he's forty, overweight, and struggles with normal human challenges. The way he grows during his journey is definitely captivating. And his relationship with Arthur is great! No instant love and no overly sensualization. Just two people getting to know each other and building a meaningful connection. PROS: Great world-building, nice plot, and storyline. Well-built and consistent characters. Sweetheart vibes without being overly saccharine. Beautiful gay romance between two mature men. CONS: Sometimes, it veers towards something a little bit naive and juvenile. But I'm just saying that to include something in the "CONS." All in all, it's a very, very nice read for those looking for a good, sweet gay fantasy story. I loved reading it and totally recommend.

Every child at Marsyas Island is written with such warmth and individuality that they feel real, despite their fantastical origins. And Linus — watching him slowly open up, question the rules he’s lived by, and allow himself to care — is so satisfying. His growth feels earned, genuine, and quietly powerful. The romance between Linus and Arthur is tender, quiet, and incredibly wholesome. It’s written with such softness that it never feels forced or overly dramatic — just two people discovering that they deserve love and support. Their relationship adds even more warmth to the found-family atmosphere, and I loved how normalised and unproblematic their queerness is in the story’s world. It’s a subtle, affirming queer element that enriches the book without ever overshadowing the plot. There’s also a wonderful sense of humour threaded throughout the book. The banter, the absurd moments, the deadpan delivery — it all balances so beautifully with the emotional themes. Nothing ever feels too heavy, but nothing feels shallow either. TJ Klune manages to keep the tone light while still exploring acceptance, prejudice, and chosen family in a meaningful way. What I appreciate most is how well the book blends everything together: fantasy elements that never overwhelm, heartwarming character moments, queer romance, humour, and a storyline that moves at just the right pace. It’s comfort reading at its best — hopeful, cosy, magical, and full of warmth. For me, The House in the Cerulean Sea is a perfect 5/5: a book that leaves you a little kinder and a little lighter after turning the final page.

I wanted to be a character in this book and live within it. I heard great things about this author and this book and it more than lived up to the hype. Reading this was like a warm, therapeutic hug especially since I just finished reading Yesteryear which is also amazing but like I needed a palatte cleansr after that (iykyk). I’ll definitely be reading more books by this author! I really recommend this to anyone!

This is such a wonderfully cute and happy story! It’s a book that’s meant to heal in the best way possible. The characters are all so unique and well-developed. The plot is absurd and whimsical. The love in each line of the book is so corny that it’s amazing. It’s one of those very wholesome books that leaves your heart feeling warm and fuzzy.

4.5 out of 5 stars. The House in the Cerulean Sea is truly so lovely, it warmed my entire heart. I teared up twice while I was reading it, and that is a very rare occurrence for me. I was just constantly like this: 🥺 🥺 🥺 I literally teared up because of a pile of buttons… If that makes no sense to you, please read this book because then you will Understand what I was going through lmao The House in the Cerulean Sea is found family excellence. It’s not only about the power of found family, but it’s also about learning to be brave enough to step out of your bubble, finding out where you truly belong and embracing the life you deserve. The main character, Linus Baker, was so precious. And his character development was fantastic. All of the characters in this book were so distinct and lovely in their own unique way. I honestly can’t even pick a favourite character, I just love all of them so much. This book truly made my heart sing with joy. I loved the ending so much!!! It was just everything 🥺 The only reason that I didn’t give this five stars is because the first half of the book is pretty slow. But in the grand scheme of things, that’s not a very big deal so I’m only knocking off half a star. If it weren’t for the slow pacing in the beginning, this book would honestly have been perfect. OVERALL, The House in the Cerulean Sea is an absolutely wonderful book and I highly recommend it!! Do be warned, though: you might cry. A lot.
