My English Springer Spaniel had battled weight gain for years. I put him on wet food (low carb) and he'd lose and be at his perfect weight. I'd then try to save some bucks and add in dry kibble and his weight would go up. I didn't love the canned foods and they were messy and took up a lot of space. This food works perfectly for him (though it does not save money). He loves it but that is not necessarily a glowing recommendation because he loves all food. And I do mean ALL food. I do add some frozen green beans to help fill him up and feed the recommended amount - but watered down to fill him up and keep him hydrated. How I prepare: Each dinnertime I make two bowls up with water and frozen green beans and then put them in the fridge. They keep fine (and the beans thaw) until the next day's feedings and he doesn't mind it cold at all. It also keeps it easy to feed him - I can just have the kids feed him if I'm not home because all they have to do it pull it out of the fridge and give it to him, It really only takes a few minutes each day to prepare and imho is easier than canned food. This is top quality dog food and it doesn't come cheap but my dog is healthy and happy and I'm so glad I found it. I love that I can get it next day from Amazon and it doesn't take up my whole pantry to keep a good supply on hand. One word of caution if you have a finicky dog - try the samples first from honest kitchen's website to see if they'll eat it before you invest in a big box.

I have a 2 year old Scottish terrier that has had severe allergies his entire life. Nothing has helped and medications only slightly alleviated his extreme itchiness. I had thought it must be a food allergy, but after trying multiple different kibble brands, I had given up on it being a food allergy and started thinking that it must be environmental. I told my husband that I wanted to give The Honest Kitchen a shot in one final attempt to see if it would help with his itchiness. When I received the Zeal formula, I opened it up and my Scottie came to investigate, in typical terrier fashion, and seemed incredibly interested. I gave him some for his dinner and he LOVE it. He's never been a picky eater, but he licked his bowl clean so well that it looked like I had washed it! Over the next few days, we noticed a big difference in his attitude and his appearance. His skin was less red and he had stopped scratching as severely as he had been. He wanted to play more and actually wanted to cuddle! When I first bought this food a few months ago, he was missing most of his fur on the front half of his body from licking and scratching it off. Now, he's got a nearly full coat of fur and any bare patches have noticeable fur growth. I recommend The Honest Kitchen to anyone and everyone that will listen to me and show off before and after pictures of my dog as proof that this food is worth buying.

We have a lab with skin issues. We have had her on all kinds of food. She's been vegan, she's been vegetarian, no luck. We use a dry food (Wellness) and she seemed to like it well enough, but we wanted to infuse some "real" food into her diet. Enter THK. We went with Zeal because her system seems to handle fish proteins best. We had no idea how much she was going to love it. She sits and waits as we make it, and wolfs down her food immediately after we put the bowl down. We've had her on literally dozens of foods, and she can't get enough of this stuff. Yes, this smells fishy -- probably because it's real fish! It also cleans out of the bowls much more easily than any other food we've given her. Kind of creeps me out to wonder why the other foods stick to the bowl and this doesn't. We only put 1/4 cup into her dry food (2x/day), because this stuff is obviously not cheap. But she eats so much better when this stuff is in her bowl that we make it work.

This was recommended by our integrative vet for our dog with a diagnosis of gallbladder mucoceal. She started with pancreatitis further searching revealed the final diagnosis above. This is the only food she gets and has been a life saver for her. I am able to add supplements easily and my dog LOVES it! I've read reviews about how it can be soupy. Keep in mind it does need to rehydrate. I mix 3 batches at a time as I feed three meals (spaced) per day. The first is not as thick as the rest but I still let it sit to thicken. Warm water is a must and I use filtered water. The other meals are put in the refrigerator and definitely thicken throughout the day. Whether it is liquid or not does not bother my dog. I've used this for over 3 years and it has played an important part in maintaining her health. If you want all meals to thicken, mix the night before and place in fridge. I just like to add supplements to the freshly mixed food. Not all dogs may adjust to the greens and such but I needed low fat and this was the best option. I have tried the chicken with my other dogs and they love that as well. I do it more as a compliment to their other food but not solely as their daily meals like the fish meal with this dog.

My dog has more allergies than I can shake a stick at, I spent months trying out various foods and brands to find a happy balance between food and environmental allergies. I cannot say that this food has eliminated her allergies - she has dreadful environmental allergies that have been making her miserable since the first day of spring. Since starting this food almost 30 days ago, I've seen a slight decrease in her obsessive itching. Whether it's the food or the constant medicated baths she hates, who can honestly say? While I cannot yet fully judge the food as it relates to her allergies, I can say that this is a top notch quality food. My beagle starts salivating the second she sees me dip the scoop into the box. She's not good at patiently waiting for the food to hydrate, choosing instead to prance around the kitchen and whine at me in protest. Yes, it smells very fishy...but it's fish! Before this food, her fur was thinning and shedding horribly. Now, her fur is healthy, shiny, and light shedding. I do believe it was the allergies that was causing so much loss of fur. We can't go anywhere anymore without people commenting on how soft she is, "you must use conditioner!" or "I bet she just had a bath!" Nope, it's a good quality diet! I removed a star from the rating for one reason: it contains egg. Protein is on the list of potential allergy suspects and chicken is the most likely culprit. I'm worried that the egg contents may throw us off on the "fish only" diet plan. I do see HK now offers a Fish and Coconut food called "Brave" that does not contain any form of chicken. But at $117/month I'd rather drop her onto a homemade diet plan than shell out that kind of money. I love this food, but my wallet does not and is stretched as it is with Zeal. Compared to the thousands in vet costs I've accumulated since rescuing her in March, it's a small price to pay if it means long term relief for her, though. A final side note that I found funny: My cat will not eat this food (he's severely picky and only eats my homemade raw food), but he sure does love rolling himself all over the dog bowl. The bowl smells like a giant fish, so I would bet that's the reason for his wonky behavior. It's certainly entertaining. :)

I have purchased Honest Kitchen dog food for many years and trusted this brand for a long time. I had previously stopped buying it after my dog developed diarrhea, but I did not realize at the time that the food could be the cause. I eventually purchased it again, believing that the previous problem might have been unrelated. I purchased the Honest Kitchen Fish Recipe Dehydrated Grain Free formula, which I had used before. After eating this food, my dog became seriously ill. He developed severe diarrhea with blood in his stool. I was extremely frightened and had to take him to the veterinarian. Based on what happened and the timing of his illness, I am convinced that this food caused his severe digestive reaction. His intestinal system has still not returned to normal. I was also extremely concerned by the large, hard pieces in the food that appeared to be pieces of bone or other hard material. Even after the food was rehydrated, some of these pieces remained unusually hard instead of becoming soft. The fish used in this product is not identified as organic, and I strongly suspect that the fish may have been contaminated or of poor quality. I also have serious concerns about whether the fish is farm-raised rather than wild-caught. Whatever the source or quality issue may be, my dog became extremely sick after eating this product. I have since switched my dog to another food, and I will never purchase Honest Kitchen again. I love animals, and I am writing this review because I do not want another dog owner to experience what I experienced watching my dog become this sick. I cannot recommend this product. To make matters worse, I was unable to return the food and lost more than $150 on a product that I could no longer safely give to my dog. This was not a minor digestive upset. My dog became seriously ill, and he is still recovering. I strongly recommend that other dog owners not purchase this product.

Our dog has mild pancreatitis so getting the fat down in his diet was critical. We mix the FISH recipe (8.5%fat) with kibbles in the morning. At night he gets Blue Buffalo Senior (4.5% fat). Seems to be working well - no flare ups since we started this diet. A few useful tips: 1) The box is awkward so we transfer about a week's worth into an air tight glass jar that we leave on the counter next to the electric kettle. 2) I use pretty hot water to rehydrate it. And I only leave it sitting about 1- 1.5 minutes. My dog goes nuts when it is time to eat 3) I mix this with kibbles. I had planned to eventually get rid of the kibbles but not so sure anymore. 50/50 feels like a good combination. 4) We did not find any real changes in his digestion/poops as this stuff is high quality and all natural goodness.

My dog has been the pickiest eater ever since he was a puppy. We've tried the big three expensive brands, tried grain free and regular, changed between lamb, beef, and salmon but all he does is grab kibble in his mouth, bring it to different areas of the house, eat a few pieces and leave the rest for hours. My wife found this food to help with his pancreatitis the vet recently diagnosed him with (he throws up a white foam after eating "high" fat foods) and I have never, in the 6 years I've had him, seen him actually get excited for his food like a normal dog. It boggles my mind to see a dog have a complete 180 about his attitude for food and since he doesn't throw it up later this stuff is the greatest thing I've ever found. My only reservation is how damn expensive it is but I'd rather order it off of Amazon than pay the vet the same price for some dry prescription garbage that my dog doesn't like eating anyway. It's worth every penny.

Human Grade Food.

I have been feeding my dog this food for the past 5 years. She has severe food allergies and cannot tolerate beef or poultry protein. In an attempt to figure out what was causing her to be so sick, we tried many different types of food, including food purchased directly from the Vet. After finding THK Zeal food, all of her issues stopped, and we were able to gradually wean her off of all medications. She has a beautiful & shiny coat, and no gas!! She LOVES the taste, dancing in circles at EVERY meal time - even after 5 years!

My dogs love it. Doesn't smell as funky as some reviews suggested

Good quality ingredients. 2 out of 4 dogs loved it. Mixed up more like soup and I didn't care for that aspect. Very strong fish smell. I have given a good rating because of quality ingredients but probably won't buy again. Really had hoped it would have prepared more like wet dog food.
