Does the timer function allow for light to come on every day or just how long the light stays on for ?

The timer is just for the amount of time it’s going to stay on. It does not have any features to set a timer to turn on.

Could I use pushpins or thumbtacks instead?

No, the light is much too heavy for push pins, thumb tacks or double sided tape. Drill holes, use anchors if not wood. However it will fasten magnetically to metals, without the bracket.

The light turns on but it don't turn off without a timer on

You can set the timer using the small remote it comes with (you have to pull the small plastic piece for the remote battery to work). You can also change the brightness or turn off the light by lightly tapping your hand on the right side of the light. Lastly, using the remote you can turn off the light. So in all there are ways light touch, timer (remote), and on/off button (remote).
