absolutely but you are best off slightly freezing it first for say an hour or so. Its great for really this carpaccio too

I know this may sound a bit stupid but when blades become blunt how do you sharpen them

As far as I know the blades cannot be sharpened. However it may be worth sending an email to the maker asking that question. I use only the "general" blade in mine and as yet it doesn't need sharpening. Been in use for about 6 months.

Does the slicer have a metal gear train, please? (My current slicer has plastic gears that wear out annually.)

from the motor is a plastic gear set. It looks substantial and in 6 months has shown no signs of issues, but I do not use it but about once a week. I am very pleased with it,. the only issue is that you have to take the rail apart, that the slicing tray rides on, to clean the slicing tray.

The blades are designed for different types of food, such as raw meats, cooked meats, cheese etc. I have not used this for slicing bread BUT since purchasing this I have saved so much money; it actually paid for itself within the first week. I keep a look out for fresh meats, bacon, ham etc on offer or reduced, slice these up and freeze for future meals. For example, Pork Loin is half price in Tesco now and I have bought two pieces and saved £10 on the price of loin chops in store.Fantastic gadget and a must have in the kitchen, also very safe and easy to use.
