The Art of The Last of Us

There can be no denying the intricate, delicate and amazingly crafted world The Last Of Us created. It is one of the most powerful concepts in gaming to this date, and for that reason alone I was almost compelled to purchase this book, and it can straightforwardly say that this only extends the love I have for the Art & Design team at Naughty Dog. Firstly, the contents are as follows: Large matte-style hardback book with an Introduction by Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, then chapters consisting of: - Joel And Ellie - The Journey - The Infected - The World - Marketing - American Dreams Each chapter showcases some form of design evolution for either characters or environments, from the first ideas to, for example, different looks and outfits for the finalised characters which you are familiar with, all set out as a pure showcase of art, with minimal annotation. For those who are familiar with these kinds of art books, this is pretty expected and normal stuff. However, what really sets this book apart from others, and what makes it one of the very best in my opinion, is the standard of art and design shown. All art books are impressive, but there is something really quite fascinating and special about the content in this one. Some of the design concepts and mood drawings are some of the very best that I've ever seen for, well, anything really. They are so evocative and moving i'm not surprised that the final game has such a well pulled off vision, as it would be hard not to be inspired. Really, it is hard for me to emphasise that enough - Although the character design sections, though interesting, are not exactly something to write home about, they are placed between amazing, powerfully evocative and very talented pieces of art and design conceptualisations. the vast majority of which are some of the best I've ever come across. Certainly, I'd be hard pressed to mention another art book that is as emotionally drawing as this one. It is very involving, incredibly powerful and endlessly impressive in its scope and talent. Beautiful, evocative art & design from a beautiful, evocative game. I would recommend to all fans of the game with no hesitation at all. Again, it one of the finest art books (in terms of the quality of content) that there is. (And just a small point to note, for those who haven't yet completed the game, this will contain spoilers)

There aren't many games as taut, engaging and enjoyable as The Last of Us was, a action-adventure survival horror video game developed by Naughty Dog and argueably the jewel in Sony's crown of exclusive titles. A dark vision of a pandemic ridden United States, a post apocalyptic world devoid of hope and ravaged by desperation, in the 3 times I played through the campaign, along with Bioshock and Infinite, it was the most emotional and memorable experience I've had in my 20+ years of gaming, because the visuals and environments are so realistic, the story so immersive and the characters so desperate, distressed and relatable, you care about what happens to them, that's what made The Last Of Us such a haunting experience, from initially being detached and reticent, our two protagonists (wonderfully brought to life by exceptional voice acting and motion capture) develop a Father/Daughter relationship, after surviving and aiding each other through desolate and scarring situations, they reveal more about each other and what they've had to do to survive, and after 3 years that's what has stuck with me, that these characters were prepared to do anything to make sure the other one was safe and alright, those actions for some reason really resonate inside of me, selfless, unselfish decisions made by a character more concerned with the well being of others than themselves.

I love seeing begging the scenes work of things I love so this book was awesome, I got to see all the alternative character designs and read about bits and pieces that went into the game, I love it

The Last Of Us is easily my favorite game, now franchise, of all time. I have been after this book for a couple of years but could never find it in stock without being super inflated in price. The art is excellent, there is a nice amount of writing to go along with it, and the print and book quality are wonderful. I have no complaints.

it's amazing to see the process on the making of the game, it's such a good collectors item for any tlou fan and a definite recommended buy! quality is amazing aswell

this was very good, it had plenty of great pictures in it. as has already been pointed out by someone else, there is a lack of textures and 3d work, which is a bit of a shame, and there is not that much on the locations and the world. the text is a bit disappointing as well, often too short and sometimes vague (although what may seem vague to me may be detailed enough for others, it is matter of opinion). but the characters, which are the most important bit of the game, have plenty of pictures which is fantastic, the book shows the early pictures as well so you can see how the characters developed.

Excellent. This is a great book that shows off some of the art and design work behind the videogame, that is usually unseen by the public. Its shows just how talented the artists at Naughty Dog are, and it's fascinating to see how the characters and locations evolved during the game's gestation. The concept drawings of locations being reclaimed by nature are simply stunning. Be warned though, as is to be expected, for every beautiful and heart warming sketch of the lead characters, there is a detailed rendering of the infected. So... perhaps not one for the coffee table, depending on your friends and the presence of young children in your home. You've been warned!

Sempre stata un'amante di questo gioco, ho comprato l' artbook aspettandomi di vedere qualche schizzo di lavorazione e magari qualche modello mentre sviluppavano il gioco. Invece è molto di più di questo. Vengono spiegati e illustrati molti punti salienti della nascita di questo capolavoro, l'evoluzione dei personaggi da cui prende vita una storia eccezionale. Centinaia e centinaia di schizzi e modelli dall'idea iniziale alla soluzione adottata alla fine. Consiglio vivamente a chiunque abbia apprezzato il primo e il secondo capitolo di questo gioco.

Allow me to start off with: The Last of Us was just a wonderful cinematic game. There hasn't been anything that could compare. Now being a big fan of the game, I was more importantly interested in the conceptual art due to being an Animation major, I have always admired their wonderful landscaping. When I saw they had it for such an amazing price on Amazon I had to get it. I was a bit wary because you can take a sneak peek of the book on here and thought maybe I had just seen the whole book on there. After ordering, it arrived ten days later in a box encased with padded bubble wrap and air cushions. What they show on the sneak peek is not even half of what you actually get in the book. The book has a beautiful hard cover and is sectioned off into "chapters" It goes in chronological order of what happened in the game. Everything from Young Joel and Sarah's conceptual design down to the University of Eastern Colorado's logo. There are pages and pages on Ellie's designs. It's interesting how it shows how she was a short-haired redhead once. It's also pretty hilarious how the infected designs are in the back, like the team that put the art book together were saving it for a big finale and boy, do they not disappoint. The infected conceptual art is mindblowingly amazing and creepy. They used to look really alien, I'm talking about severed heads being dragged behind by a two legged monster, but I'm glad they reigned it in and we got our Clickers. I could honestly go on and on about the book, but really take my word for it, it's worth every cent.

ゲーム自体も名作だったが、画集も名作。テスの初期構想とか見ていると、最初は敵キャラでデザインされていたのだろうか？ 特に注目したいのが背景の絵の多さ。背景は見落とされることが多いけど、このゲームにおいて世界観を形作る特に大きな要素だと再認識した。英語は分からないが、絵を見ているだけでどれも設定などをよく考えたうえで練られたことが分かって面白い。 そして感染者の項目は改めて（いい意味で）キモいって思う。よくこんな気持ち悪いものを考えたと、絵をマジマジと見つめながら思った。でも、ただキモいだけじゃなくて、感染者になった悲しみというか、そういう感情まで感じさせるのはさすがだ。実際にこんな奴出てきたらどうしよう、とか想像してるだけでちょっとしたホラーな気分に浸れる。 ゲームだけでなく、画集も気合入っているので間違いなくお勧めです。ゲームを知らない人にもお勧めできるレベル。 それにしても、表紙絵をあらためて見るとホントすごいな・・・ 男が二人血眼になって取っ組み合って、その背後にナイフを振りかぶる少女って・・・光の当たり方で善と悪を象徴しているかのようにも見えるし、この絵だけでも奥が深い。 ※ちなみに自分は書籍で買いました。キンドル版は評判悪いみたいなので、ちょっと残念・・・ でも、書籍で見る方が何となくこのゲームの雰囲気に合っているような気がする。 高いけど、書籍で買って後悔はしていない。
