Bad Neighbours [Blu-ray]

Bad Neighbours is your standard American comedy filled with drugs, sex and alcohol.
Bad Neighbours is your standard American comedy filled with drugs, sex and alcohol. Add a fraternity lead by a hot guy, an Australian hormonal mother and a chubby wannabe-hipster father. What do you get? Bad Neighbours. The old peace seekers versus the young noisy hooligans. Standard formula is standard. That is literally the plot. Yet, this allows creativity and innovation to be injected into the film to bring out the hilarity. Surprisingly, this has several funny moments (even after the nth viewing). Ranging from Robert De Niro impression parties ("are you talkin' to me?"), weird hazing sessions and a dance off to the background music of Flo Rida. Random, but somehow oddly amusing that does conjure up a few laughs. Some of the jokes are high on the profanity level and does tend to feel like a competition to see how much the film can gross you out. Grows tiresome unfortunately. Acting all round was functional. Zac Efron has come along way since High School Musical and luckily has good comedic timing. Sure he looks fantastic...heavenly...I would even say Godly, but he can act. Seth Rogen is Seth Rogen. Rose Byrne pulls in a more natural performance and is a personal favourite of mine. Aside from that, it never pushes itself to more than just a crude comedy. If you like that, then great. I however like wit and subtle humour. That's not to say I didn't enjoy this, in fact in terms of recent comedies this is ranked highly. Also, the air bag scenes had horrendous human CGI that just detracted from everything else. If you couldn't do it without CGI, don't do it at all...especially in a comedy like this that utilises many props to give that sense of authenticity. Slight nitpicks but they do amount to negatives towards the film. It's undeniably watchable and a good comedy, but its contents grows tiresome as the runtime goes on.

OK, but nothing really that special
I'm a man of many Seth Rogen and comedy films and i feel i have to be honest this isn't the greatest of films, but it's not all bad either, the film itself has its moments but overall lacks something, the films 'Superbad', 'Knocked Up' , 'Pineapple Express', 'Step Brothers' 'This is the End' and 'The 40 Year Old Virgin' (which all star Seth Rogen) in my opinion are all better than this one. However on a good note this film is better than the rather boring and overlong 'Funny People'. But don't let that put you off buying it, its still worth a watch :) 6/10

Party Time
2014 has been lacking in really decent comedies but this one I thought was spot on. Zac Efron was suited to the fraternity president role, a darkly comic role about a guy willing to push the limits of what is acceptable to be remembered for all time in the fraternity hall of fame. While Seth Rogan and Rose Byrne were also great as the neighbours who used to party and want to fit in but are mostly looking for the quiet life now they have a baby.

The Fratpack
A good comedy with a great cast. Zac Efron's character is a world away from HSM. Rose Byrne has her Aussie accent. Check out Dave Franco's party trick. Seth Rogen produces and stars. I like the social media gag. I'm selling my new copy. Solitary man in black. Baby Stella is cute. Also see Lakeview Terrace, House Party. Good impressions. If you like There's Something About Mary, American Pie then this is one for you.

Great Film!
A real steal on Blu-Ray and probably one of Rogen's finest, Bad Neighbours (or simply 'Neighbours' in USA) both epitomises and exaggerates how annoying it would be to have a fraternity living next door. Rogen and Efron star and blend so well that the film just doesn't stop being funny at times. A great film and worth a watch but as a spoiler, the sequel seems better.
