The classic economic treatise that insipired Thomas Piketty's Capital in the Twenty-First Century The publication of The Wealth of Nations in 1776 coincided with America's Declaration of Independence, and with this landmark treatise on political economy, Adam Smith paved the way for modern capitalism, arguing that a truly free market - fired by competition yet guided as if by an 'invisible hand' to ensure justice and equality - was the engine of a fair and productive society. Books I - III of The Wealth of Nations examine the 'division of labour' as the key to economic growth, by ensuring the interdependence of individuals within society. They also cover the origins of money and the importance of wages, profit, rent and stocks, but the real sophistication of his analysis derives from the fact that it encompasses a combination of ethics, philosophy and history to create a vast panorama of society. This edition contains an analytical introduction offering an in-depth discussion of Smith as an economist and social scientist, as well as a preface, further reading and explanatory notes by Andrew Skinner. Timeless Insight into Economics, but Not for the Faint of Heart
Reading The Wealth of Nations is like opening a time capsule that explains not just how markets function, but why we think about economics the way we do today. Adam Smithโs insights into labor, value, trade, and the invisible hand are foundational, and itโs fascinating to see how many of his ideas are still relevant in modern economic discussions. The depth and precision of his arguments are impressive, especially considering when it was written. That said, this book isnโt a light read. Itโs dense, long, and written in a formal 18th-century style that takes some patience to get through. But if you enjoy history, philosophy, or economicsโor just want to challenge yourselfโitโs absolutely worth the effort. This is more of a study piece than a casual read, but itโs one Iโm glad I took the time to work through.

Excellent retailer
Received on time in excellent condition, like new; I would definitely purchase from this retailer again. Though this is a special "Fingerprint" edition as a collectors item it can also be used as your textbook. Subject of book is very pertinent today in understanding a modern economy even though this book was originally written by a "moral" philosopher in ~1775 complied from his lecture notes. Comes with an introductory note helping one to understand how Adam Smith contstruted his philosohy of economics.

Nice less expensive edition.
Will look great on the shelf. Look forward to reading; could give some insight into our economy and economics today; though much has changed, basic principles remain.

If you care read this!
Smith will prove himself to be a sharp thinker someone who canโt be labeled or claimed by any political faction. He name-drops Hume(his close friend a lot). After reading the wealth of nations you will come to the conclusion that the invisible hand is only used twice and that itโs just fluff in this work and really isnโt the meat of his work even though itโs commonly cited by people who donโt know anything about his work both left and right. FIRST OF ALL YOU MUST READ HIS THEORY OF MORAL SENTIMENTS BEFORE YOU READ THIS BOOK OR YOU WILL MISINTERPRET IT. If you leave thinking Smith is a greedy scum bag youโve read it the wrong way.

Simply excellent
The book is fascinating and hugely insightful. This edition is very well presented with relevant introductions and, unlike most "grown up" books, has a good size font which makes it pleasant on the eyes when reading. I highly recommend.
