More Rutherford Less Marple
Joan Hickson did a wonderful job as the ultimate Miss Marple on TV. I have the DVDs and watch them still. The other TV versions and film versions don't come close to matching the story or character. So why is Margaret Rutherford worth a small investment? What you have in this wonderful collection of films is Rutherford at her best, The story lines have little to do with any of the Miss Marple books. Unlike any other adaptations you will not know who did the evil deed before the end because you have watched other Marple films. This collection uses the Marple name and creates almost a unique World. The small village is still there inhabited by strange characters, the detective who finds Miss Marple a nuisance etc. But that is really where it ends.Miss Rutherford is a delight and the films boast great British actors. Even a young Joan Hickson turns up. So if you need to study the plot lines of the Christie books invest in the wonderful Joan Hickson DVDs. If you want pure light entertainment with a superb actress and a mix of stars from the past then please look at this collection too.The only problem is you may watch them all too quickly and need to watch them again. Light and fluffy and worth a giggle or two.

A Must for Fans of Margaret Rutherford
This box set containing all four Miss Marple films with the inimitable Margaret Rutherford is great value for money. Each film is on a separate DVD, each disc comes in its own case with the original artwork and cover notes. The films are black and white and the aspect ratio is 1.33:1. Optional English (and various foreign language) subtitles are available for all four films, Picture and sound quality are perfectly adequate for films from the 1960s.Three of the films are (not too closely) based on novels by Agatha Christie, one, Murder Ahoi, is a murder mystery in the style of Ms Christie, featuring the character of Miss Marple created by her. While Rutherford's Miss Marple is far removed from the genteel little lady of the books, her much more belligerent take on the legendary amateur sleuth is highly enjoyable and by now quite iconic. And one can't help but love her sidekick Mr. Stringer (who doesn't feature in any of the books), brought to the screen by Rutherford's loving and beloved husband Stringer Davis.Great entertainment for a rainy weekend. Probably most enjoyable for those who fondly remember these films from decades ago.

subtitled miss marples
I had long thought these Miss Marples were not available with subtitles; but I recently discovered these Warner Bros ones have subtitles and they've been around since 2004. Never saw them on Amazon before. It was a delight to watch them on dvd at last. Only downside is the sound is quiet and funnysounding on 1 or 2 of the discs but not so bad on the others. Curious to note that one of the films is in the cinemascope ratio but the others were in the 4/3 ratio (tv ratio) ; I think it was the ship movie.Anyway it was great to have these on dvds but partially spoilt by the sound level or quality.

British classic Agatha Christie
I love old films and these are full of charm and style. Set in a time when horse and cart still was the main village transport. Crime still happened though, but Miss Marple was at hand to save the day. Brilliant.

Margret Rutherford: A true gem from a bygone era.
For me the 'old fuddy-duddy' Miss Marple was epitomised by the great Margret Rutherford. Wow - could she act. What she lacked for in appearance she more than made up for in her stage presence. The odd glance, glare and stare, smile or disgruntled chunter where just a few of her skills. She just oozed charm, and I can't help but be moved by all that she did. That alone is enough to warrant high praise, but these are plots inspired by the pen of another great lady, Agatha Christie. Yes, the films are in black and white, the music is very dated and the sets are very low budget and now historically period, but this too is an asset. I love this series of films and although Angela Landsbury came close, no one has quite captured the imagination of the Marple figure quite like the wonderful Margret Rutherford. P.S. And yes, her true life husband Stringer Davis has a small role in each too. In my opinion, turn the lights down and transport yourself back 60 years or so with these. For I think they're all of 5 star value and will not fail to entertain you.
