Taking readers on a breathtaking visual and scientific adventure, renowned physicist Brian Cox reveals the Solar System as you have never seen it before: from Saturn's moons, where giant ice fountains spout into space and oceans are made of liquid methane, to Jupiter, where storms rage that are twice the size of Earth and giant super-volcanoes dominate its tortured moon of Io. Professor Cox takes you on a journey of discovery where alien worlds become places you can see and explore. He introduces you to the planets and moons beyond our world, finding the biggest and most bizarre and powerful natural phenomena. He visits some of the most spectacular and extreme locations here on Earth to unveil what our planet can reveal about the wonders of the Solar System. Employing his trademark authoritative yet down-to-earth approach, Brian explores how these previously unseen phenomena have dramatically expanded our horizons with new discoveries about the planets, their moons, and how they came to be the way they are. Includes 500 diagrams and full-color photographs Review: Carl Sagan's torch in good hands - One of the best memories I keep dearly from the end of my childhood (I was about twelve) is waking up early on Sunday mornings to watch Carl Sagan's Cosmos (it was not a primetime show where I used to live by that time...). I also keep a copy of the series book. I didn't end up being a scientist but still have the same awe with everything related to the subject. Not long ago, a friend sent me a link to a video of Professor Brian Cox talking about the Higgs particle, the LHC and so on, and I knew that a new great teacher for the new generations (fortunately my daughter's) had taken over. Great book. Great series. Review: Cheryl - If your inner geek is crying to learn more about the planets (mainly) then this is the book for you. You can tell the author lives for astronomy and I loved how he was able to relate landscapes on the other planets to what we have on Earth. By the end of the book, though, I found the reading a bit dry. What a fount of info on our solar system!

Humbling!
It doesn't matter who or what we are, it doesn't matter who or what we THINK we are... We are ALL "just" humans, who for the briefest moment in history are borrowing this very special, beautiful, complex and fragile place we call home, Planet Earth ๐ There are very important lessons to be learned from these pages!

A great book....
I bought this book on an impulse after watching and falling in love with the BBC series on TV. This book, "Wonders of the Solar System," has beautiful imagery, well-designed page layout, easy-to-understand graphics, and an overall high quality. Granted, I bought this book in part due to its graphic design, as this is my profession, but I also bought it to help me better understand space for an exhibit I am working on. The explanations are clear and concise, and the content is written in a way that doesn't require an astronomy degree.

Wonderous!
Fantastic read about our solar system. Easy to understand. Comprehensive and fascinating. Based on the television series. Five star recommendation.

Beautiful and informative.
This is a beautiful book and very informative. It is a perfect adjunct to the PBS series of the same title.

Unavoidable
Amazing, wonderfull, full of interesting details, charts, facts. Those of you who did not see the BBC series this is a must to read, browse, or just watching pictures. Though, if you just watched, I am sure you would start reading. In-depth information for anybody interested in universe. Of course, not for pro. (Do not buy Kindle edition, the book will loose 50 % of its value without those incredible pictures.)

interesting book - poor formatting
It's a very interesting book but the formating is very poor. The pictures and drawings are quite illegible on my kindle. They'd be maybe better on kindle dx or even betten on ipad. In addition there seem to be pages missing or the part of the text is illegible in the kindle version 'cause parts of the text have different highlights which is visible on colour on my ipod. On the whole quite a interesting book but save youself the trouble reading on kindle - go for ipad or kindle pc.

One of the Series on Wonder about our Universe, this one focuses on our closest grouping, our home Solar System.
I've been watching the BBCearth channel on TV and Professor Brian Cox is an outstanding narrator and a stimulating writer who includes a subtle bit of humor. Yet he's so down to earth in how he speaks to us that we are not surprised when we see how gentle he is with the people and animals he interacts with. There is a camel he apologizes to after taking a DNA sample from the camel's cheek while the camel complains mildly while held for this minor indignity. When he apologized to the camel, the animal settled down! This man knows his specialty and makes it easy for us to follow what he's teaching. Although it sometimes feels like he's all over the map, he is giving us examples of what he means. As he progresses, he ties everything together with provocative zingers that leave us thinking. I can't put down what he writes and I've gotten into the habit of going back and rereading some items to be certain I understood clearly. In short, Brian Cox gives us more than we asked for, enough that we close off with that sense of wonder he's talking about.

Inspiring
In my oppinion, Brian Cox is the new Carl Sagan. The guy is so passionate about science and has the ability to inspire people to understand more about the universe.

Beautiful Book + Great Value
Very good book, accurate facts and beautifully illustrated. It's out of date by about 10 years now but so long as that is understood it's still a great book and worth having.
