I use this in my smaller tanks, cutting the generously sized filter down into pieces. It never fails to turn brown or black, indicating time for removal, and letting me know that it is working like a charm. I find this far better at capturing smaller pieces of debris and tiny dust and impure particles which regularly run straight through foam filters.On my smallest tanks I don't bother with foam as this will block any medium to small sized pieces of debris and not restricting water flow. Review: Works well - I cut 2 pieces of material and placed them in the bottom of my Aqua Clear outside filter The bottom of the lower piece was very dirty after a few days, while the top surface was pretty much clean. The top-most layer was as clean as when I put them in showing that the bottom layer had, by itself, removed virtually all the particulates. The 50 Micron filter pad seems much more efficient at removing particulate matter than the standard foam inserts which get dirty all the way through, top-to-bottom, making me wonder how much got through.
