GMRS not FRS. Good product.
Remember this is GMRS not FRS. If you cannot take advantage of the GRMS platform don't get these. If you want a simple walkie to chat short distances get the FRS models. Only issue with these is the access to software updates or changes. It's almost non existent. BUT this seems to be similar to the Baofeng 888 and you could probably buy the connecter for those and use it to access the Baofeng site and adjust settings. Just remember the lower channels are low powered. Upper channels are GMRS higher powered. You do need a license. It's cheap and is yearly I think. Transferable for 1 family if I'm not mistaken. Have fun.

Perfect for my application
Purchased it to communicate with family members in our property in southern Europe. It exceeded our expectations: Not only did it handle the 3 story reinforced concrete house without any problem, it allowed communication (3-4 km away) with the nearby village. even under no direct "line-of-sight" conditions. Communication is clear and battery life up to par. Required FCC license was easy to obtain. We are very pleased with the price and the performance.

Range is not 5 miles. Wont make it 1/4 mile to end of driveway.
Range is not 5 miles as advertised. Wont make it 1/4 mile to end of driveway. They work enough to talk from house to someone in yard or outbuildings so will be keeping them but if you are buying them for the 5 mile range do not waste your time or money as they will not do the job.

These work really well. We have spring water a the well is pretty far from the house. We are able to talk to each other from a long distance. Would definitely buy again

Their range is for sure not a long range...
The only thing that they could have done better is the reach distance in town. The straight line of sight is okay. It is surely not long range radio's.
