How do I put the metal soil spear in the ground?

There’s two ways you can do it: 1. Drive it into the soil using a 5+pound sledgehammer. Use a 2x4 wood to protect the metal and pound the wood, not the metal. Be sure to remove the plastic bushing inside of the stake to prevent damage to it. Drive it straight in as possible. 2. Use a shovel to dig a hole about the depth of the metal stake. Place stake centered in the hole and fill the surrounding hole. Compact the loose soil around the stake to prevent any movement. I did something similar to #2, but I placed the stake in one of the cinder blocks that build up my soil box. I just filled and compacted soil around the stake within the block itself.

Does this come with a base? Like to stand on its own without going into the grass?

No, you dig a hole in the grass and place the holder/type thing. It comes with a small cover so when you take the line out you can cover the hole in the grass.

Can I store the pole for the winter?

Yes. The lines found down and is secured by the zippered case. The pole slips out of the mount easily. Mount has a cap to prevent debris from entering hole. Won’t take up much space
