Is the pump able to sit inside the skimmer?

No, it is not designed to work that way. The input to feed water to the skimmer is on the back of the skimmer. If the pump were mounted inside the skimmer how could this connection be made?

1 1/4 inch there's a lot of different hose out there I have used tetra flexible hose and not had any issues. I've read where some hose has pinholes and end up leaking. Not to say if you drag this hose across the rocks it won't leak either, but mine hasn't yet.

How can I keep turtles from getting sucked in and drowning?
