Orca - The Killer Whale [DVD]

This is an excellent adventure/drama story with moral issues. Its beautifully filmed in wonderful locations around Canada and Newfoundland. The Orca whale of the title is definitely the wronged victim and seeks vengeance on the instigators of the brutal slaughter of his partner. Excellent performances from Richard Harris, Charlotte Rampling and Will Sampson. Watch out for a young Bo Dereck in one of her first screen roles. Highly recommended.

A fisherman ensnares a killer whale and as a result its mate begins a war on the local community, smashing and sinking fishing boats and reeking havoc in its determination to find the culprit. Said hunter soon meets a Native American whose people have experience of orcas and who makes him realise the only way to stop the whale's rampage is to go out and face it.From the whale song of the opening titles to the credits closing over "My Love, We Are One" this is quite the most emotional and tear-jerking film I've seen in a long while. Basically if you're looking for another "Jaws" then try the "Shark Attack" sequels. This is not a simple "creature feature", but instead is an intelligent and dark movie about loss, revenge and obsession. In some ways it's Moby Dick reversed, with the Big White Hunter as the one being pursued relentlessly by the vengeful whale. Truly gripping scenes include the slaughter of the female killer whale and its unborn young, its mate's obvious despair and fury, and the quite unnerving "whale funeral procession" which takes place.

A little bit inspired by Jaws but a good fictional tale nevertheless,with a nice score by Ennio Morricone .Richard Harris and Charlotte Rampling play their parts very well,great supporting cast also.The film touches on some very true statements about Orca behaviour i.e huge brain size and therefore it’s abilities to feel almost anything we do. I wouldn’t want to upset an Orca as their memory maybe the greatest of all.In 2019 a female and her pod was observed pushing a dead calf for over 1000miles .Places like SeaWorld would have been involved in the kidnapping of whale calfs at sea in the past just like in the film. This would be extremely traumatic for any family to endure.Some pods have also been observed hunting Great White Sharks in the last decade. It is worth noting that wild Orcas have never hunted a human.

Arrived before the due date. Good packaging, thanks to all concerned. . A movie I love, in my opinion superior to its contemporary 'Jaws'. I love Jaws but it is very much black and white, the shark is the bad guy and their is no grey areas. Orca turns all that on its head with an intellectual outlook that gives the killer whale a fair crack of the whip. The 70's was a great decade for movies and for me Orca is one of the finest movies of that era. Unfairly painted as a Jaws rip off upon its Iinitial release if you don't like it then maybe you don't have a heart, which is fair enough. But to those of you with a heart I say buy it, you won't be dissappointed. 10/10 movie.

Captain Nolan got a case of the heebie jeebies and it serves him right.Go on yourself Orca, wrecking the village, pinching Bo Derek's leg, and celebrating with some exceptional flips. You want revenge, well you shall have it.

I AM SO VERY HAPPY TO HAVE NOW GOT THIS MOVIE ON BLU-RAY, THE PICTURE LOOKS GREAT AND IN ITS 2.35.1 FULL WIDESCREEN FRAME SETTING WITH 5.1 DTS SOUND TOO, THIS BLU-RAY IS A LOT BETTER THAN THAT OF THE OLD UK DVD, THE BLU-RAY ITS SELF IS A REGION 2 SPANISH IMPORT BUT YOU CAN GET RID OF THE SUB,S AND ALSO PLAY IN UK FREINDLY SPEECH TOO, IT WAS RELEASED IN JAPAN FIRST AND I THINK THIS IS A BLU-RAY-R MANUFACTURED PRODUCT COPY BUT AS I SAID IT LOOK,S GREAT AND IT,S NOT AT A BAD PRICE TOO FOR WHAT IS A VERY GOOD FILM FROM 1980, FOR ME A 10 OUT OF 10 ON THIS ONE.

OK let me try to review this, it was made around the same time as Jaws and therefore I feel got less attention, which was quite unfair, the plot is actually kinda believable yet obviously pushed beyond for cinema, there are few holds barred with some quite difficult to watch scenes, some would say unnecessary however again based on what does happen I feel was attempting to educate us through shock.OK this will not be for everyone but if you like the Jaws films then give this a go.Regards Mr G

A sensitive eco enviromental horror thriller about a fisherman's ignorance and his crew, an oceanographer scientist a wise Indian and a killer Orca hell bent on his murderous rampage after the butchering of his monogamus female mate and the abortion of their unborn calf. Excellent musical score, well directed and handsome cinematography the film boasts an excellent cast from Richard Harris, Charlotte Rampling, Keenyan Wynn, Will Sampson, Bo Derek and Robert Carradine. Bluray has very good clear picture transfer and audio sound featuring a short making of documentary-interview, standard trailer and a favourable knowledgeable critic film reviewer supplemental commentary track. Highly recommended.
