'Great Funky, Yet Soulful Album'
On the back of this and their previous 'Standing Together' set, for a while there in the early 80's Midnight Star were just about my favourite band. Surprisingly however, 'Victory' was not a great commercial success back in 1982 and they would have to wait a few more years (and adapt a more electro funk based style) before they too would join the roster of Solar hit makers. This is a great record however and dancers like 'Hot Spot', 'Strike A Match' and the title track all have a bit more bite than the more commercial sound of label mates like Shalamar or Dynasty. Midnight Star's greatest asset was their prowess in the vocal department, Melvin Gentry, Bo Watson and Belinda Lipscomb all being incredibly talented and soulful vocalists. Sweet ballads like 'Move Me' and 'Be With You' this time out show the softer, more soulful side of the outfit. Add to this the nice mid tempo 'You Can't Stop Me', the spiritual 'Love Is Alive' and (best of all) the uptempo but slightly less hard funk 'Make Time (To Fall In Love)' and you have a classic album. If you liked their later 'Freak- A- Zoid' and 'Headlines' records this will be a departure for you but for me It's a toss up between this and their 'Standing Together' as to which was the bands best album of all. Gritty, soulful 80's funk at it's very best. BUY IT!
