Old Roses

Simply a beautiful book with splendid photographs! It's worth the money, even without the informative text. I'm an enthusiastic fan of David Austin's English roses--have often given bushes as gifts. Austin's major book on English Roses traces the ancestry of the roses he's developed. This book provides even greater insight into the breeding of those roses. Austin gives a full sense of the worth of these Old Roses in their own right and makes growing them for their own sake a worthwhile undertaking. Again--the pictures are a sufficient reason for owning the book, even if the only plant the reader has a close association with is a potted African Violet.

When it comes to roses the more photos the better. I would have loved to have seen samples of the interior of this book in the Preview function offered by Amazon in the past. It would have helped me see what I was buying so I could make an informed choice.

Beautiful book. Came as expected

David Austin is a legend among the world's greatest authorities on roses. This is an excellent book on Old Roses, well written, with good information on the varieties selected, with gorgeous color pictures, David Austin is one of the best known authorities in the world of roses, the creator of the class of roses known as English Roses, and the book is a great addition for any rose lover, particularly those interested in the historical roses, also known as Old Garden Roses. There is a world of great beauty awaiting to those who are willing to try these wonderful plants. People who watch classic movies from the 30s and the 40s, for example, have seen those big white roses used again and again in such films as Mrs. Miniver and others, and that rose is included in this book (see p. 160). Even if you don't have your own "secret garden." you will have great fun with this book. It doesn't include one of my favorites, 'Mme Louis Leveque', but no rose book can include anybody's all favorites, since there are more than 10,000 varieties still in the market! Get the book and enjoy it!

I saw this advertised when it was due to be published in one of the Women's County' magazines and managed to get it for Father's Day for hubby, who is the Rose Addict in the family. He is over the moon with it. It is a packed with information and detailed pictures of 'Old Roses' introduced prior to 1900. A Glossary Index at the back, as well as Index of names and also a Bibliography. The Contents is split between 'The Original Old Rose ' and 'The Repeat-Flowering Old Roses'. This would be a very special present to your self or any Rose enthusiast.
