As others have said, what is more important: a BBQ lid that looks like-new on the inside, or the health of everyone who eats food cooked in it? In reply to Antonio Herrera - what BBQs are you buying that have paint inside of them?! Maybe a black anti-rust layer, but that sure as **** ain't spray paint.

You could use it either way. before deterioration might be best, in my opinion. I don't know if that paint layer would peel quicker, though.Good luck!
