Do these have their own onboard volume control or do they just adjust the volume on the bluetooth connected device?

They do NOT have onboard volume control from my experience. I've tried this on my phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 10+) and my older Samsung S8. Both respond the same which is like with all other BT devices I've connected including cars (using OEM equipment, not BT/FM transmitter) it will change volume on the device itself. You will see your BT volume increase/decrease as you change volume on the buds. There may be a setting on your phone to change this that I'm unaware of but out of the box - paired - and using them without the need of any setting changes - that's how it worked for me on 2 of the Samsung Android devices I've paired them to.

can you use either ear buds for phone calls? & How is the battery life while using the phone?

Yes either unit will work solo if needed, for phone calls. Battery life while on the phone - not sure anyone has tested that scenario, so....can’t say with any certainty.
