Strong well made good quality and fairly easy assembly for one person.
The bench arrived within 48 hours of placing my order, on 29/4/21 at 10.02 am. 6 days before earliest stated arrival!!! So full marks to Amazon, the seller and the carrier. The carrier was FEDEX - The driver was very helpful too, it is not an easy package to handle andhe had not seen my sign directing deliveries to side door and so took it to my front door but very kindly picked it up and moved to where I needed it.My Immediate reaction was - it was a very large box, and was printed in a number of places with the words ‘MADE IN INDONESIA’.A fact not disclosed in the sellers information. ‘Built by Craftsmen’ supplied by a family business is the main emphasis made in the blurb. My second observation was that the carton had a small (about 100 mm x 50 mm) puncture in the outer corrugated which on opening did prove to have chipped a small piece off the front rail in a very conspicuous place (see pic 1) but I wanted the bench and did not wish to get involved in arranging returning it, also I am quite happy for things to look a bit bedded in. In fact when I assembled it I found that one of the seat struts had been damaged in manufacture see (pic 2) I knew it was before shipping as it was same colour as the treated strut, but it was not too conspicuous and I was not bothered about it, some buyers might be of course.AssemblyI read the instructions and decided that I would assemble it on its end (pic 3) as suggested which working on my own was the best way. As is so often the case the fittings supplied were ‘exact’ quantities which when you are spending so much I always find unnecessarily ’tight’, it is so easy to loose or damage the odd fitting, so why not just put a couple of spares in? especially when the product is from Indonesia. In fact the dowels supplied are very tough indeed and withstood a rubber mallet pounding them in. A mallet is much better than a hammer so I advise this - if you miss with a hammer you will damage the bench. I glued the dowels with PVA as a belt and braces, (pic 4) It does not mention in the instructions that each item has a small printed id. paper label indicating ‘A’ ‘B’ etc. where A fits to A. they are small labels so might be missed but as the dowel holes are probably drilled at the factory with the bench assembled this helps make sure alignment is correct (see pic 4) there are 4 screws supplied (pic 5) to secure sides (pic 6) of seat to end legs, these looked a bit poor quality so I used some better ones I had.The overall quality of this bench is superb for the price, and it is well thought out to make assembly both straightforward and VERY firm, once assembled (if done correctly) there is no movement at all. I did treatthe assembled bench with Teak Oil in addition to the manufacturers process, it only took ten minutes (you can get Teak oil in a hand spray now which makes the job very easy).PackagingAs stated the corrugated outer is perhaps a bit prone to puncture, mainly due to the weight of the bench (and it is heavy) they could perhaps look at a slightly thicker board. Inside the bench is wrapped, perhaps unnecessarily? in a synthetic fine poly material (see pic 7) which is not recyclable and to be honest I don’t think it gave much protection anyway and a paper product would be better all around. There are two packing protectors ‘Sac Guard’ (see pic 8) which do a good job at stopping the heaviersections rubbing against each other in transit but like the foam these can not be recycled.
