I bought this for the express purpose of "unlocking" it. It works fine with the same cable as my Baofengs. It's nice to have a good dual-band tranceiver BUT also a multi-band receive-only/scanner.I use it on two 2-meter repeators. One 30+ miles to my South. Another 27 miles to my West. Excellent reports from fellow ham operators.Wonderful to be able to program in 6 meter (50-54mhz) repeators as well for listening purposes although that band is kinda' sparse "traffic-wise" these days.WELL-BUILT radio....Great volume. AND ofcourse, in addition to the charging dock (included), the ablity to charge with USB-C. Like the big ole' volume knob...Might try some other firmware packages....BTW, talking charging, it held a charge for months when I sorta' forgot it and left it on the table.The Big 4 "Name Brands" need to take notice and start offering "Open Source" monitoring radios of their own.

The build of the radio is first-rate with a rugged case that will withstand more than a few inadvertent drops to the floor. Transmit and receive audio are both outstanding and the radio is very easy to use with the stock firmware. The real story is that this radio is very customizable with the third-party development of firmware that adds features never before seen with these inexpensive radios. The stock firmware is fine if you wish to stay with it but I have found the IJV firmware to be the one for me with its ability to create up to 15 different memory groups which makes it possible to use this radio as an aircraft band scanner, ham radio scanner, GMRS scanner, public service scanner, marine band scanner and any other service(s) you wish to scan. Using the CHIRP software you can disable TX for any of these services that you do not have transmitting privileges. This is by far the best deal out there right now and I now own 3 of them! There are many reviews on YouTube and also a lot of "How To" videos if you wish to explore them. These radios offer a lot of fun for your money and I highly recommend the UV-K(58) and its identical twin the UV-K6.

This is the UV-K6 - supposedly an update of the UV-K5 but I struggle to see much difference between the two besides a little facelift and an amber background screen. Regardless, great little HAM transceiver that works relatively well on UHF/VHF, even with the provided antenna. Includes NOAA channels and FM radio. This radio has a great support community and the ability to update its firmware and [responsibly] expand the capabilities of this radio makes it a great buy. Decent battery life with multiple charging options, Decent TX/RX range in a crowded city on all advertized bands and after a third party update, surprisingly decent AM aviation band reception with the right antenna. Chirp compatible, solidly built for its price and aesthetically eye-pleasing. Just wish the battery was a bit larger.

Incredible for the money! RX coverage from 50 to 600 MHz. Shows TX at both ends but the antenna is 2m and 75cm so heat will kill the finals if you do it. But I will get an adapter and sweep the antenna with the mfj to look for dips later. For those using it on 1.25m I'd order a triband antenna. GMRS works with no problem. IN SPITE OF WHAT YOU SEE ABOVE, IT COMMS WITH CHIRP JUST FINE. ABOVE USER SELECTED THE WRONG RADIO! USES THE SAME CORD AS BAOFENG. Menu takes a min to learn and having the manual helps. That being said, the manual sucks like most Chinese radio manuals do. Overall I'm impressed, scrambler sound like some sort of frequency inversion type, basic but kinda works. CTCSS tone are spot on. Freq counter shows stable output. When I get home I'll put it thru on the bench. On the road, it works.N0VYF

This is an awesome radio with great features. Works very well and has tons of frequencies. Easy to upgrade with software than can be found online. Great product for the money!

I'm sure lots of people can write a longer review, but here's the deal- This radio has a modified frequency range that makes you wish you had never bought that Beofeng. If you want a CRAZY good radio at a CRAZY good price, you won't regret buying this. You can flash it with one of the Beofeng to USB cables no problem. I'm gonna buy about 30 of these and sit in my bunker.

I can't say that this radio is the best in terms of RX sensitivity and selectivity. But it works reasonably well. What it is good for is scanning CTCSS and DCS tones. It will get the tone and keep it on the screen until you need it. Interestingly, two of three of these radios turned out to be pretty weather resistant. I forgot them on the patio, and they got rained on pretty bad. I just took off the battery, shook out the wanter, and let them dry for a couple days. They were as good as new. The third one kicked the bucket, though. But it's still impressive.
