The strength of this new version is its total single-mindedness about vehicular homicide; it has the virtue of no cluttering subplots or simpering sentimentality. And banish all memory of the original's wild satirical comedy: Death Race is as grim as a dinner tray to the face (a reference that will be explained in a key sequence). In a slightly futuristic maximum-security prison, cons take part in brutal races around the island prison, their violent deaths watched live by millions of viewers. Jason Statham, possibly cast because of his driving dexterity in the Transporter movies, plays a man wrongly imprisoned for murder. Joan Allen provides her brittle cool as the warden, who recruits Statham to assume the masked persona of a legendary driver called Frankenstein. Tyrese Gibson is Frankie's main rival, Natalie Martinez provides the fetching eye candy, but the acting honours go to Ian McShane, as the philosophical prison mechanic. One misses the cross-country race from the original film, as the setting here is claustrophobic and the cars are largely colorless and indistinguishable from each other. Director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) continues to display the sensibility of a video-game addict, which will either be a recommendation or a turn-off, depending on your own tastes. Great film
Its not really about the cars or the racing, but a dramatic story of a wronged man getting revenge. Set in a brutal world with some dark humour. There are some memorable scenes and its a film that withstands repeated viewings. The extras include on-set film of the production and detailed narrative from the director. Paul Anderson says he wanted, amongst other criteria, a star who had the physique of Charles Bronson. Hands up who loved the Bronson films of the 70s & 80s - this is as enjoyable as the best of them. Must seek out those Bronson films... and Death Race 2 (which I see Anderson produced). For the money, a definate bargain.

took almost a month to get my dvd and guess what? It was a region 2 dvd.. Cannot watch region 2 on a normal dvd player.. Zoverstocks did NOT have any information that this was a region 2 product... Gee, nice suprise... Never again!!

Viel kann mann ja nicht falsch machen wenn man deathrace richtig in Scene setzen möchte. Viel geballer und tolle Sprüche, die Besetzung ist toll nur muss man den Film im Original sehen denn so einiges wurde wie so heufig sehr schlecht ins deutsche rübergebracht. So, der ton ist echt eine bombe wenn man die richtigen Lautsprecher hat. Am besten zwei jackhammer. Das Bild ist auch auf recht hohem Niveau. Das Bonus material hat mir auch gefallen. Wermutstropfen ist die digital copy die sehr schnell verfällt. Die uk fassung unterscheidet sich nicht mit der deutschen blu Ray bis auf die 15er Freigabe!!!
