Product description CD: Mike Oldfield,Guitars .co.uk "Apart from guitar," Mike Oldfield once confessed to an interviewer, "I can't play anything really well. I can get by on keyboards--enough to use--but I'm not really good at anything apart from guitar." This 1999 album--appropriately titled, as it happens--offers nothing less than a showcase for that facility and for Oldfield's two distinctive styles of playing: his very clean, heavily compressed Stratocaster sound and his busier, more contemplative acoustic work, where his technique (flawless as ever) betrays the influence of classical guitar, english folk and flamenco. Overdubbing madly, Oldfield creates his usual array of sketches and longer pieces--though modesty forbids him from claiming true axe-hero status: "It's dead easy," he's demurred, "because it's all just hammering. If you learn a basic claw-hammer technique from folk picking, you can do all the stuff I do." Hmm. I'll take his word for it. --Andrew McGuire

Not in the same league as his very early albums, but well worth having
To my ears this is easily one of the best of Oldfield's more recent works. It doesn't match up to those very early albums (Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn, Incantations and the original TB) but there's some seriously good stuff here that should appeal to most Oldfield fans. If you've got "The Songs of Distant Earth" you'll instantly recognise the main phrase in "Cochise" (though this version is superior) but most of the tracks feel like they've come from an earlier time, and that's probably why I like them. Well worth getting, and ridiculously good value if you buy the album as a used CD as I did.

Oldfield wearing comfy slippers - bliss!
An album of guitar pieces as the title suggests and from the master performer himself Mike Oldfield. His playing is effortless, technically brilliant and enough hooks to get caught upon over and over again. I loved the album and have played it several times. This man has produced so many quality albums it is easy to miss one or two of them. I am playing catch up and enjoying every moment. Highly recommended. 5* all day long.

Mike OLdfield - Guitars
The CD are songs that emphasize the various riffes guitars. It is an album that gives an idea of experimentation, but it is still enjoyable. It is an album best suited for fans of Mike. There is a disc with high inspirations "Tubullar Bells ',' Hergest Ridge", "Ommadawn" and "Music of the Sphere" among others. However, it is not necessary, as the work of Mike should be cherished and well interpreted. It is only a comparison of their work. "Enigmatism" and "Out Of Mind" are perhaps the best tracks on the disc, but there is no ugly. Good! Note 7.5.

Solid Oldfield
READ THE INSIDE COVER. ALL sounds on the album (drums sounds included) are produced from live guitar. Once i read that i listened again. Simply to have a mind to conceive such an idea is outstanding let alone to produce such an album. Whilst i would agree that he has better albums out there, to use ONLY guitars and come up with this is epic. As someone who grew up on Tubular Bells, this is one for the collection. Oh i forgot to say, Well engineered and reproduces well with good dynamics. Glad i paid good money. Well spent.

5 star favourite!
This is probably my favourite Mike Oldfield album.....probably, because Tubular Bells III is equally brilliant, I think, building on the ground-breaking original all those years ago. His mastery of the guitar is up there with the best of all musical tastes. The diverse playing on this album is what shows Mike's brilliance. When I listen to this I'm reminded of Chris Rea's The Blue Café....another one for the collection of greats! I've just remembered (and had to edit my review) Voyager also up there in my favourites category....so that's three I have to juggle with!
