Great Drill
Only time will tell how good this drill is. It is still new and I hope to get many years of hard work out of it. I have used other drills and like this the best so far. The only issue I have had is using regular drill bits and not getting it tight on the bit. That may be me getting the chuck tight. I can not think of anything that I would change at this point.

Wobbles out of the box, clutch doesn't last
It's mediocre out of the box, compared to similarly priced cordless drills. Chuck wobble is one issue - extremely lose bearing most probably to reduce drag and improve battery life. The clutch on mine recently gave out (almost no use as a hammer drill and minimal with the clutch set for screws).

Awesome drill!
I've owned this drill at least a year now, and all I can say is buy it! Lots of torque, quality drill! I don't use it everyday and the batteries last a while before needing to be charged. I've put 1/2 lag bolts into a 2×4 with no issues on the hammer drill setting. I love this drill!

Extreme wobble, poor design engineering
Right out of the box, I drilled two 1/16" holes 1/16". Chuck wobbled quite a lot, enough to cause vibrations in the drill. My work requires precision drilling in electronic circuit boards, cases, etc. so this won't work. Sent back promptly. Also, the LED light is stationed at the same place as their old drills -- just below the chuck where it casts a shadow at the point where you are drilling making it virtually useless.

Again, chuck wobble!
Is it possible find actually a drill driver without chuck wobble?

given i liked my previous makita i think i am going to ...
guy that noticed that shaft that holds bits wobbles excessively is right-this is only when you move it by hand-while drilling i did not notice any issue ,even drilling 1.5 in hole.I compared it to older makita, bosch, craftsman and they have almost no wobble. i am surprised that consumer report did not notice this and rated this drill high.i think the shaft is too short causing it to wobble.hope makita engineers look at this issue.given i liked my previous makita i think i am going to keep it.everybody rates their batteries high.

Shaft wobbles out of the box.
My XPH06 came as part of the Makita kit XT248 which also includes a XDT08 impact drill. The XPH06 hammer/drill/driver has excessive play in the shaft coming from the gear box to the chuck. I was hoping it was just the chuck not being properly tightened at the factory but unfortunately for me the problem is in the gear box. After noticing the defect I went to a couple of different Home Depot stores to check other XPH06 and found some tight and some loose. There was one that had been at a test bench for a while and was still tight so I believe Makita has a quality control problem. I have been using some wood boring spades and also long drill bits and the wobbling is at least annoying. The BL 1830 (3.0 AH) batteries are very long lasting at least for me, building a 14x20 feet wood patio awning, which included driving lots of screws and boring 5/8" holes in 4x4s and 4x6s, plus 1 1/4" recesses to accommodate the washers and nuts for 1/2" coach bolts for angle braces. My prior experience has been with Panasonic drill drivers which are great have the best chucks and are still in perfect condition but all batteries eventually die. I have only put them aside because buying a newer drill with batteries is more cost effective plus I'm getting the latest development in batteries (I went from NiCad to NiMH to Lithium Ion) My next step is going to be contacting Makita. I'll try to remember posting on my experience with their customer service.

I looked at Bosch and Ryobi and this one felt by far the best in terms of being able to precisely apply torque
The drill is lightweight (same weight with hammer as older non hammer drills), the motor sound is not high pitched, the brushless motor does make a subtle difference. I looked at Bosch and Ryobi and this one felt by far the best in terms of being able to precisely apply torque. Makita batteries are great. The separate ring to switch between srew and drill is useful.
