Memoirs of a Murderer is a memoir of the life of frontman David Gunn set to the backdrop of Flint, MI. Cut to a crackling old tape recorder, Gunn's narrative eclipses three distinct movements, traveling from a very real place down a rabbit hole into the abstract. The three movements align with Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality, in which the three elements of personality - known as the id, the ego and the superego - work together to create complex human behaviors. These are David Gunn’s Memoirs, chilling and starkly poetic, introspective and brutally honest. Keep this in mind as you listen to these tapes.

Almost great, definitely good.
I totally agree with the other reviewer who did not like the spoken word pieces. As if the music didn't tell the story well enough, these pieces pretty much feel like a gangsta rapper telling you how amazingly badass he is, not only leaving nothing to the imagination but beating you over the head with egotism. That said, the album itself is pretty cool. At first blush it seems like it's going to be a Slipknot clone, all downbeats and yelling vocals. But as the album progresses, the first thing I notice is the singer has an amazing voice, when he isn't yelling (not that his yelling voice is bad, it just isn't very original). There's at least one song that evokes Tom Waits or Nick Cave, and a number of inflections used throughout which illustrate an amazing command of his vocal cords; I almost wonder if he had professional training. As for the music, there are times when it does feel too Slipknotty, the downbeats just chugging away, but just when I'm starting to get bored they do something different; I haven't checked the total running time, but it is quite long and by the time you get to the end you realize there is quite a bit of variety to it.My feeling is there is great potential with this band. I get the sense this is exactly the product they are aiming for, so don't imagine they are likely to change the formula, but this band could be truly awesome if they channeled some of the bravado into more creativity, emphasizing the vocals and a little less repetitive chugging in the riffs.

Not a bad debut
Great first major label release from these guys. Wasn't to familiar with these guys when I first bought this (I only bought it because they were opening for Korn and Slipknot). I was blown away by the shear intensity of this album and the fact that they modernized the sound of a lot of bands from the late 90s and early 00s. This is definitely an alternative metal album, but it is really heavy at times. Its also has some very good lyrics and even some spoken poetry to really add to the diversity. Buy this especially if you want more of a social message/meaning to your metal.

flint michigan kings of metal
I just wanted to say that I am very impressed with this album. I first heard abt this band from a friend who showed me their videos on youtube which are awesome. I was impressed with how genuine the band sounds. They have a hatebreed sound but alittle darker. After getting the album I have to say it was not what I expected(in a good way). Although it has many heavy brutal songs there are some acoustic songs which are very dark with alot of meaning and truth. Give this band a chance, they are a breath of fresh air to the metal community. Simple riffs, straight up beat down metal mixed with dark and eerie imagery. I also like the way the album was recorded. It was mixed perfectly for this type of music. Since I bought this album I cant stop listening to it. Big fan of what these guys are doing..get this album. Next step is to see them live. King come to new york!

A great buy. Not disappointed at all. Highly recommend.
I love everything about this album. It has a great mixture of being very intense to going to very great sounding acoustic songs. The details and imagery of the lyrics is something great to hear in the music. Every song tells of lives that have dealt with so much. Everyone of the songs is fascinating yet disturbing to listen to at the same time which entices a person to keep listening to the entire album from start to finish. All the songs are great to listen to. I like the heavier songs like Fat Around The Heart and War Outside because they remind me of older bands I grew up listening to. The slower songs like Eyes, Devil Don't Cry, and State Of Nature showcases a more sensitive side of the band. It shows a more mature side of the band. Altogether, I recommend this band and album to anyone who likes to hear music with a bit more to it than just screaming guitars, banging drums, and hollering vocals.

Its ok.
I bought this album based on the radio songs. Those songs are killer and warrant high marks, but the rest feels too much like filler to me. The vocal styling is great, but not so much when he just starts reading poetry. Half the album is just spoken word that kills the mood and energy from the previous songs. I will be looking for them to release another, but I will definitely have to see if it's just more poetry. If that's the case, I will not purchase the album and just buy the songs I like individually so I am at least supporting the bad a little.

The best Nu-Metal band in years!
A definitely breathe of fresh air so to speak as far as Nu-Metal goes. I would recommend this band if you are into Slipknot, Korn, and/or Limp Bizkit. King 810 were awesome on the Prepare for Hell tour and their album does not disappoint. if you are a fan of Nu-Metal definitely do not pass this one up!

After seeing their set at this year's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Tour I couldn't wait to get my hands on this full length album, and after numerous listens. This is probably the most multi-faceted metal release I have heard in quite some time, at times it is visceral and unapologetic and the next moment it takes you down a completely different rabbit hole. So if your willing to take a chance and have an open mind this album is totally worth your time.

Not disappointed in spending 10 bucks on it... The good songs are good the other songs are Meh... Reminds me of a mixture of a very angry version of Korn and slipknot with out steel drumsBest songs are the ones they have videos for on YouTube.... Great imagery in songs I will say that

A portrait of a culture
Good album. Interesting production. So while there are some derivative bits it has a new feel. The topics are dark but presented well and paint a picture of youth trapped in a culture. Does it glorify that culture well that depends on your view. If you take it like a painting of the way it is you can argue it just reflects the environment it came from. If you just take the attitude then yes it’s a problem.I had no idea what this would be like when I got it. It was an eye opener to a culture I am nowhere near.It is good. As an aside the band are OK live but the songs and brooding came over better on the album.

Following in the path laid by nu metal pioneers Slipknot and Korn, Memoirs of a Murderer is a polished, perfectly written album, with addictive choruses and powerful verses, but it would be neglectful to simply call it 'another good album'. From its pre-album releases it was clear King 810 would be a force to be reckoned with, and as the lyrics of their lives show, they have more than tested that mettle, making this not just a concept album based on far-off experiences they know nothing of, but instead a gritty and tangible work, in every way perfect. There is anger here, of an intensity rarely so convincingly demonstrated by sound alone, and sadness, for a world that cannot help but destroy itself, and these are aptly written into acoustic ballads such as 'Devil Don't Cry' and 'State Of Nature' and hateful anthems such as 'War Outside' and 'Killem All', plus one of the most thought-provoking tracks I've ever witnessed, 'Write About Us'. In all, it is a complex and devoted album, written so immersively and intelligently that the horrors spoken therein cannot help but be felt as if the listener has, indeed, been a part of that life.

Diversity at its best
I have not stopped listening to this album or King 810 for 3yrs now. Epic album. Heavy in places then melodic. Such a broad range of superb songs. For those that compare them to Slipknot are ignorant. King 810 are unique and nothing out there sounds anything like them and vice versa.Love the album and the band

Kill 'em All
What to say, well this band just cant be explained. If you like heavy then you will love this. It is such a good morning album to get fired up on the drive to work. I really dislike the few "spoken word" tracks on the album but they are forgivable for the rest of the album is just brutal

Truly beautiful for something so heavy.
King 810 were such a breath of fresh air when I first found them and they haven't stopped in creating incredible music. This album is a deep, semi disturbing, and scarring set of memoirs in song form about the groups experiences growing up in Flint, Michigan. Learn about the history of Flint in your own time and this album takes on a whole new level of intensity.

Stick to proper vocals!
Love the "real" singing but not so much the "talkie" stuff. Saw them support Slipknot a few years back which made me sit up and take notice of them.

Gimmicky but good
If it wasn't for the blatant use of the whole gang gimmick used to market King 810, this would be a ***** review. The songs are strong both musically and lyrically, and Dave Gunn sings every word like he means it. This is a really heavy album, with some really standout tracks. It's worth a listen.
