The dramatised story of how Jimmy Perry and David Croft overcame BBC management scepticism, focus groups and cast constipation to get the much-loved series onto air. Running from Perry's initial idea in 1967 until the transmission of the first episode in 1968, this affectionate and witty film shows the beginnings of Perry and Croft's writing partnership and the casting woes, personal clashes and production difficulties that put the show's very existence in jeopardy. It reveals to fans and newcomers alike what went on behind the scenes in the making of Dad's Army and is a true love letter to British creativity.

Charming, Detailed, Mostly True Bio of a great television series
The movie itself tells you up front that most of the details are accurate; hence I include that in the title of my review. I live in the US and ordered this DVD to be played on my region-free player.I have to admit that I found Jimmy Perry a little hard to take at first, but then as the story continues and you see him grow into acceptance of his role as writer, it was very heartwarming. The movie is told brilliantly, though more concise than what I would have wished. I think it could have done very well with another 30 minutes. All of the actors come across believably as the men they portray, and the back and forth between Croft and Perry is just enough to show that each man unselfishly could engage in collaboration. The movie also shows that amazing, tangled, and perilous journey that even a brilliant script has to take to get to production. There's a lot of humor and warmth but also a nice dash of the hard realities of working with others. I really enjoyed this movie. The line at the very end is hilarious.

This film was marvelous, from the writing to the acting. I bought the entire series when we were in England last.
