.com Aliens is one of the few cases of a sequel that far surpassed the original. Sigourney Weaver returns as Ripley, who awakens on Earth only to discover that she has been hibernating in space so long that everyone she knows is dead. Then she is talked into traveling (along with a squad of Marines) to a planet under assault by the same aliens that nearly killed her. Once she gets there, she finds a lost little girl who triggers her maternal instincts--and she discovers that the company has once again double-crossed her, in hopes of capturing one of the aliens to study as a military weapon. Directed and written by James Cameron, this is one of the most intensely exciting (not to mention intensely frightening) action films ever, with a large ensemble cast that includes Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, Paul Reiser, and Michael Biehn. Weaver defined the action woman in this film and walked away with an Oscar nomination for her trouble. --Marshall Fine

Excellent 4K transfer—the best version of Aliens yet
I’ve owned Aliens on VHS, laserdisc (the 1990 box set), DVD, and Blu-ray. I’ve watched it at least 50 or 60 times, maybe more. The 2024 4K version is, hands down, the best version yet released.First, the 4K transfer is pristine. I believe it was rescanned from the original negatives and then de-grained using A.I. Aliens has always been a grainy film, but all of that has been cleaned up without (for the most part) leaving faces looking waxy. The color timing is excellent, much better than the bluish hue that was chosen for the DVD and Blu-ray releases. The black colors are deeper and faces look more like their natural skin tones. What’s amazing is how well the tiny details hold up in 4K. The model work, miniatures, and sets look incredible. I’m not certain how much CGI was used to cover up elements that didn’t stand up to high resolution treatment, but it’s not noticeable…except for the famous shot at the end where Lance Henrickson lifts himself up off the deck of Sulaco’s landing bay to grab Carrie Henn—you could previously see the hole where his body went through the floor, but that was fixed with CGI for this release. It’s well done. The one place where the visuals struggle is James Cameron’s use of rear projection to capture visual effects in-camera (like the dropship crash). They’ve never looked great, but they were passable on VHS or even DVD. The 4K transfer really makes them stand out as obviously rear projected. Some CGI touch-up may have been appropriate, but Cameron (God bless him) didn’t pull a George Lucas and do that; the film is largely his 1990 special edition without monkeying around with it.The sound mix is also excellent. Many films these days (not just ones by Christopher Nolan) have muddy dialog that’s overpowered by the sound effects and score; there’s just a bit of that in a few isolated places, but for the most part the dialog was clear and audible on my 7.1 home system.4K players are notorious for struggling with the bit density of 4K discs, and this one was no exception. My Sony UBP- X700M hung up right a the moment where Ripley fell into the airlock with the power loader and the queen. The video started up about 5 second later, with those 5 seconds missing. Your mileage may vary with the 4K disc in your 4K player. The 1986 theatrical version of the film is also included on the disc, with the isolated musical score (both the original and the final version). All the bonus features from the Alien Anthology 4-film Blu-ray box set are on a separate disc.If you’re a fan of this movie, this is the best version yet. (Except for the disc’s cover art, which is very meh.) Own it.

'Aliens.' 4K Blu Ray.
'Aliens.' looks and sounds absolutely fantastic on 4K blu ray.If like me you like to see grain on blu rays of Films that were shot on celluloid film stock, and like me you've up till now been dissuaded from buying this release because of all the online chatter about excessive grain removal and characters' faces looking 'waxy' then I assure you, these complaints are completely unwarranted and there's nothing to worry about.Yes, this 4K blu ray of 'Aliens.' does have less grain than on previous 1080p releases but there is still grain in the image - although admittedly you do have to look quite hard to see it. However this is a small consideration compared to the huge gains in sharpness, clarity and (modestly increased) colour saturation. The image is also noticeably brighter in dark scenes, but somehow the technology used to achieve this hasn't done so at the expense of deep blacks and atmospheric shadows. Which is to say that the moody tone of the Film has not been sacrificed. The one thing I did notice is that some close-ups on faces show a strange 'shimmer' on facial outlines, and the image is so sharp that some of the in-focus head hair looks just TOO sharp to me.However this is easily resolved by simply turning the sharpness control on your TV down a bit - and keeping it turned down for the duration of the Film. Well, that solved the issue on my TV anyway. Also; none of the close-ups on faces looked waxy or unnatural in any way to me. Any close-ups of faces that don't show pin-sharp detail are more likely the result of set lighting choices and camera focus. In short; in my opinion there's absolutely no reason not to buy the 4K blu ray of 'Aliens.' - and I'm quite picky about how my 1080p and 4K blu rays look! Also; I like Films to look the way the Director wanted them to look so quite apart from all the unwarranted (and often premature) complaints and fears about this 4K release of 'Aliens, if this is how James Cameron always wanted the Film to look then that's fine by me.VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Yes, it's better!
Look, I'm a filmmaker and I've shot everything from Super 8 and 35mm to full frame digital 35mm. But the reality is here is that JC is the ARTIST and he decides what he wants for his baby. He never liked the excessive grain and I myself always found it distracting. I mean...hell, that was a LOT of grain. So now Aliens is more detailed and looks like it was shot last week. At times the effect of the denoising AI goes too far, but overall this a terrific and much improved upgrade that looks amazing with my 4K projection and 125 inch screen.Detail is good to excellent and sometimes stunning and this remains one the best action sci-fi flicks of all time along with T2 and The Matrix. Looking ahead, it should be apparent that some damaged films, especially silent ones, can now be restored to pristine quality. And nothing is lost since the originals are still preserved. In the final analysis...It's HIS movie. I like what he's done to get it closer to what he wanted. In that sense it's more "original" than the first release.

Looks and sounds better than ever
I'm a home theater nerd and this is one of my all-time favorite movies. I know people online are in an uproar over the fact that this movie looks like it has been over done with the AI and artifact removal. All I care about is the fact that it looks amazing. And it does that. I'm pretty sure that if it was a brand new movie they would say it was an amazing transfer. But I guess everybody just wants it to look like it did on the Blu-ray back in the day. Or they are just so against AI that it doesn't matter. Whatever. I'm just going to keep enjoying this.

Hermoso 4K UHD
