John Lennon rose to worldwide fame as a founder member of the rock band the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. However, Lennon also had an extremely successful solo career with album sales exceeding 15 million. His biggest solo hits are all featured here including ''Imagine,'' ''Instant Karma,'' and ''Jealous Guy.''

Lennon on a budget
The 'Icon' series are good, inexpensive compilations which provide the casual buyer the chance to own some of an important artists' most essential hits in one place. Of course, there are far more extensive John Lennon retrospectives available, and if you wish to hear more than the eleven tracks on offer here, then I'd suggest that you buy EMI's 1997 Lennon Legend: The Very Best Of John Lennon , which is probably the best collection of his singles. What you have on this collection, ideal for dipping you're toes in before you go further, are 11 singles, including the timeless 'Imagine', which beautifully describes the difficulties of achieving world peace, the stateside chart-topping '(Just Like) Starting Over', Christmas favourite 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)', as well as lesser hits like his cover of soul and R&B singer Ben E. King's 'Stand By Me', which is given more of a rock edge, and 'Love'. I wouldn't have chosen all of the songs on here myself, and there are some very notable absences, the most obvious are probably 'Working Class Hero', and 'Woman', but both of these can be found on the alternative compilation I've recommended. If you want to hear something by John Lennon without The Beatles, then 'Icon' will give you a general flavour of this legend's sound. Ultimately, this is timeless music which will continue to delight and inspire future generations. A handsome picture graces the back of this CD, but please by aware that there are no liner notes to read in the booklet.

a low-cost compilation
This 'ICON' album presents a selection of some of the most popular and well-known songs by John Lennon (as a solo artist, separate from the Beatles). It's a compilation of 11 tracks - most of which had been issued as singles during the period 1969-1980. Lennon was an exceptional singer-songwriter, a genius wordsmith and a good musician - and he was responsible for creating a large number of fantastic songs. As such, this tiny collection doesn't really represent the artist's body of work as a whole. But it's a terrific taste of the wonderful material Lennon provided. The ICON series is a budget line of records. At £5.99 (as I review) this is a bargain. However, there are other compilation albums available - such as Lennon Legend , which is the same price and yet offers more substantial content. There's also the 2-disc set Working Class Hero - The Definitive Lennon , which is far more comprehensive (but a bit more costly). This is a good album, but it's only a partial 'best of'.
