Ballistol is the best of the bunch
Nontoxic and it does the job. I have been using Ballistol to clean and protect handguns for years. It was developed for the German army in WWII and has stood the test of time. Let it sit in a barrel or on surfaces showing deposits for at least a half an hour. Light scrubbing and a light coat on the metal after cleaning to preserve it. Nontoxic, it won't hurt your hands or your system. There are a lot of toxic options out there that may work a little faster but not any better.
