Ayerphalo 38oz Glass Sourdough Starter Jar Kit for Beginners with Guidebook

I made this purchase after I spent two weeks trying to cultivate a starter in a mason jar, only for it to grow mold and have to throw the whole thing out. It was my first time and I did not know how important the type of jar you use really was and the experience of having to clean it was nearly impossible due to the ridges. Leftover starter would crust on the edges and harbor bad bacteria to grow. Watching everyone online make it look super easy made me feel very discouraged and I almost wanted to give up and just say this wasn’t for me. I’ll just go buy some bread. BUT one night I was late night scrolling and saw this starter kit. The price and the way the jar seemed so much better for cleaning was alone enough for me to purchase. And when it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it came with so much more! The band with the time tracking is sooo helpful, as before I was just tracking times on my notes app. The stickers were nice and it came with a few so if they wash off the glass or you do a new starter you have plenty. The little helpful guide book it comes with is so cute and amazing, I can’t believe I revived all this for under $20. Above all, the cloth top was a game changer! In a week after following the instructions, my starter was bubbling and active. I truly believe this is a great purchase to help beginners. It would also be a fun gift for someone. The container is wide enough to fit your whole hand it to clean and scrape the sides. I would transfer the starter out and do a deep clean after a few days just so I wouldn’t make my first mistake of letting bad bacteria grow. Soaking it in warm water for at least a hour before scraping really helps. It was also really easy to store in the fridge with the rubber lid after I wanted to bake. I did make my first loaf, but due to my own fault I didn’t let it rise for long enough, and it came out too gummy inside. I think with a bit more practice, I will definitely have a yummy sourdough loaf!

Perfect size for a casual baker (although if you never maintain more than 50g of starter, I'd go smaller). Importantly, the sides are completely smooth, unlike a mason/ball jar, so it's much easier to swipe off the sides and easier to clean. The spatula is great: it has just the right amount of curve to help swipe the sides and scoop out starter. The well crafted side loop on the glass is helpful for holding the jar when you clean it and of course for resting the spatula. The timing/level band is helpful, the temperature sticker isn't too useful for my smaller amounts of starter, but it's cute. The little plastic measuring cup has been handy. Solid instruction guide and recipe book. QR code for some cute little freebies and helpful service. The only "negative" is that "Jar net weight 380g" is printed on the side, but there are some parts here. My jar is 372g when bare. Add the fabric lid and I get to 379g. The silicon base/lid weighs more and the band is a few grams too... so just take a measurement for yourself based on your set up rather than rely on their designation. It really is otherwise a perfect jar and by far my favorite one to use.

The Ayerphalo Sourdough Starter Kit really rocks! All of the equipment is of high quality. I received everything as advertised very quickly. So quickly, that on my third day of the starter, the starter had expanded. I've provided some pictures to show the growth of the starter on the third day. Included of course, is a 50+ sourdough recipe book plus a internet link template for progress and baking sheets that you can print out. It has all my favorites and more, such as recipes for sourdough pizza, rolls, cinnamon rolls, tortilla/burrito shells, hamburger/hot dog buns, cakes, cookies, and pie; just to name a few. I spoke with a friend who has been making sourdough bread for 20 years, and is currently taking classes from a chef. All the advise and tips she was giving me was already in the Ayerphalo instructions recipe book. I like the pictures and step-by-step instructions. They are easy to follow. Check out their description for further details. If you want to eat healthy, you can start by making your own bread instead of store bought processed bread which has added chemicals. My starter will be ready in a couple of days to start making sourdough bread! After that, pizza, after that....

This is a really good kit to get you started in sourdough baking. Of course, you don't actually NEED any fancy equipment - you can use mason jars and coffee filters with rubber bands. But this kit makes it convenient and more fun. Nice jar, conveniently wide enough to work with (unlike mason jars that are somewhat narrow at the top). Nice feeding band and the jar is graduated with markings that are easy to see. A 6-oz measuring cup is provided, which is also very convenient for feeding the starter. Comes with a very nice spurtle for stirring that has a nice bend at the bottom to help scrape out the jar. Two temperature indicators are also included. And of course you get a convenient feeding band to indicate last feeding as well as the level of the starter when you fed it last. Also included is a nice recipe book. Overall it's a great kit to make the process more convenient. My only complaint is that the jar has a glass loop attached to the side. Now, this is actually very convenient to make sure you don't drop the jar as you are moving it around, but that little loop (see the photo) is definitely going to get bumped and broken off eventually in everyday use, so I am not a fan of that feature overall.

I have stored my sourdough starter in plastic and wanted to change to a glass container. My ball jars are either too small for the volume of the starter/growth or have a curved top so they are harder to clean well. I bought one of these amazing Ayerphalo glass starter jars and after using it briefly, bought two more (Yes, I have three different starters). They are very easy to use, store, clean, and they look pretty on my shelf when my starter is active. The little recipe book is good. I had difficulty with one recipe and contacted by email customer support; surprisingly I had a good response within hours. I really like the red rubber cap for longer storage in my refrigerator, and the cloth cap works great when my starter is active. The thick rubber band helps me know the rise of the starter. The temperature sticker has been helpful for me to find a good, warm place to keep the active starter. All of the components that come with this kit are helpful. All are good quality. I highly recommend this company and product. My only concern is that the jars are a bit tall so they don’t fit on my to shelf in the refrigerator; not a big problem, the three jars are in a lower shelf. I don’t think a more shallow jar would work as well, so I have just rearranged my shelves.

Wow, I am IMPRESSED with the provided recipe book in this kit. I've included some (not all!) of the photos of recipes I've tried, and they are all delicious- I'm not even joking about that. This isn't a paid review, just your average housewife. The discard chocolate chip cookie recipe? IT WILL BE YOUR NEW FAVORITE, PINKY PROMISE!!! I literally receive compliments on this recipe EVERY time I bring them to a party or get together & they certainly are ADDICTING.....The chocolate babka is to die for too, OMG YUM!!! The only recipe that lacks a wow factor so far is the peanut butter cookie recipe, you can hardly taste the peanut butter. Everything else has been superb. I was always intimidated by bread- wondering if it's rising long enough, baking long enough...however, the bread recipes I've tried have amazingly been successful! *I am still practicing with making the classic sourdough loaf* but the other bread recipes have turn out fantastic, especially the discard hamburger buns. I bought this kit as an early birthday gift and my second attempt at creating my very own starter. It was a success this time- I made mine mid November of 2025, and she is still going strong. A very fun learning experience making a starter from scratch, feeding it and learning how to use it. It's satisfying to create something with your own two hands, ya know?! What advice I'd give to those brand new to this: -get a 2nd jar! When it comes time to swap jars, it just makes it easier to have a clean one to transfer your starter to during a feed. -get an electronic scale, it makes feeding the starter a breeze. You'll likely end up using the scale for measuring while baking & cooking too -do NOT use the provided fabric cover for the top of the jar...use the silicone one!! Silicone keeps moisture in, while the fabric will dry out the top of your starter and create a crust (learned from experience) -keeping your cookie dough chilled (vs using room temp cookie dough) allows the cookies to keep their shape, and not spread while baking due to the discard in the dough. -Have fun and seriously try not to devour every single chocolate chip cookie you make!! Ha!

Kit seemed amazing but then this week the jar was knocked over just on the counter, and it immediately shattered into a thousand pieces on the counter. It didn’t take much to make it shatter. Very disappointed. Need something sturdy.

I love this sourdough starter kit. I’ve been working with starter using standard wide mouth canning jars for a long time. I decided to splurge and this is the one I chose. I liked all the extra goodies I got with this starter kit. Especially the scraper. As you progress through your sourdough journey, you’ll come to a point where you minimize discard. This jar will not help with that. It is a larger wider jar and is designed to grow a big batch of starter. I wouldn’t use this jar to store my starter in the refrigerator. I’d transfer it to a smaller more manageable container.

Love this set, I really like the spatula. Good shape to work with.
