One of my favorite games, ever
I'll skip over the major points that have been said by most other reviewers and just give a few minor ones that stood out to me personally. -- This (may) apply only to next-gen, but the graphics....wow. Especially great after you take over a ship and everything brightens for a few seconds or at that midday time when colors are so clear. Looks incredibly sharp. -- No glitches! The map is enormous and I've run into maybe 2 glitches at 98% completion, and none that have interrupted gameplay (once a guard was stuck in a rock...not a big deal). -- Getting of the main story line is as much fun or more as continuing with it. I've never bought a game where I didn't finish the campaign first. I've logged somewhere between 50 and 60 hours so far and have happily been engaging in ship battle after ship battle just for fun. -- The characters! At first I was disappointed that pirates like Charles Vane and Blackbeard had small parts (imo) but now I just appreciate the attention to detail Ubi gave even small aspects of the game. -- I loved the way the story built over time. Maybe it was because I took so much time between main story missions to tool around in the world but I felt some suspense leading up to....let's say Edward's big discovery so I don't spoil anything. I wish other characters were explored more, like James and Anne. -- The shanties are awesome. Even though the method to collect them doesn't make much sense, they're still fun. Much more exciting than other collectibles anyway. Keep them!! -- The varied islands and whatnot are really immersive. Background noises change from location to location - at the beach you hear seagulls and waves, in the jungle you hear insects, etc etc. They vary enough to keep things interesting without being unrealistic. -- The upgrade system for the Jackdaw is great. As an added bonus, even when you're done with the game in other aspects, you have incentives to keep upgrading because those Lengendary Ships are pretty hard otherwise. Honestly, I didn't feel like much of an "assassin" in this game, but it wasn't lacking in any way. The present day, as always, was just not as....fun....as the rest of the game. But, still an interesting backstory. Also, if Ubi takes away naval battles, I think the series will suffer. I am trying to think of cons but the ones I can think of are really tiny. There's something for everyone in this game, except maybe FPS people and they have enough games to make 'em happy. There are a ton of plantation/warehouse raiding opportunities but they're optional. After every successful boarding of a ship you have 3 options, and choosing one plays one of the same 3 cutscenes each time. It's repetitive but only lasts a couple seconds. Also, the reward from the Mayan Stelae is lame....but other than that I love this game! Highly recommend!

Excellent game, you'll love it.
I don't play this game, I gave it to my sister for Christmas. I have though, sat for hours watching her play and she loves this game. It looks amazing. We were at a game store not long ago and when asked if they bought used Assassins Creed games they said "No, not unless it's Black Flag because that game is extremely popular" so that's pretty high praise in my opinion.

Excellent Game - Remote Play on Vita makes it a must buy!
You get a lot of value out of Assasins Creed 4 Black Flag. There are a ton of things to do in This game. There are a lot of different side missions too that are actually fun. You can play it for hours and hours and still not be bored. Definitely the best PS4 game I got, and I got a decent amount of them. A lot of people reviewed this game but I want to concentrate on the Remote play Feature of this game that works if you have a PS4 and a PS Vita. Remote Play is a feature that allows you to play a PlayStation 4 game away from your Television and on your PS Vita screen. Very Cool. There is nothing gimmicky about this feature and if you have both you will definitely use it because it works soo good. However Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag works better than most games that use this feature. I have tried remote play with Battlefield 4 and it works great as far as the connection, but the screen is a little too small to work with BF4. This is not the only reason it doesn't work as well. The PS4 Controller has a touchpad L2, R2, L3, & R3 buttons that a PS Vita does not. Instead what the Vita has to compensate is a touchscreen and a rear touchpad. On Battlefield 4 for example L2 & R2 which is the 2 further back triggers on the PS4 controller are delegated to the top of the rear touchpad. L3 & R3 are the buttons you push down on the PS4 Control sticks and they are delegated to the bottom of the rear touchpad. All of these buttons are used frequently in most games and they are pretty hard to hit on a PS Vita. This Basically makes playing BF4 on a Vita very hard and something you probably wouldn't do. However for Assassins Creed 4 the L3 & R3 buttons are accessed at the bottom corners of the front touchscreen and are much easier to hit. L2 & R2 take up the ENTIRE back touchpad and again are much easier to hit because of this. These change of controls makes a world of difference and make AC4 seem like a game that was made just for the Vita when you are using it. Also to access the map which uses the Touchpad on the PS4 controller is accessed easily on the Vita's Touchscreen. As far as the connections between the Vita and PS4 go I have my Playstation 4 in the Basement and use the remote play when I am in my Master Bedroom which is all the way up on the 2nd Floor. The direct connection to the PS4 (which is the default way remote play will work) was not good at all. Just too far away from the PS4 to make a good connection. However the connection over the Wi-fi was much better. My only problem was my router was also in the basement so it would sputter every now and again. I hooked up a Unifi Wireless Access Point on the 2nd Floor and now it works perfectly. Very Very rarely will it slow down and if it does it is for a split second. This feature makes this game and the PS4 be truly next generation. I basically feel like I got 2 games for the price of one with this one.

The ship to ship combat isn't as dreadful as you'd expect...
I've loved the AC series so this was a no-brainer purchase and so far my favorite launch title for either console based on overall impression. AC1's unique take on investigation leading up to the assassinations is still one of the most ground breaking innovations the series had in my opinion. When they started to take a step away from that formula I was nervous, but they continually improved...up to Revelations. That game was a stalemate in the progression of the series. With AC3 being so buggy, the story was entertaining but not as gripping as Ezio and Altair's stories (although I loved the Revolutionary War setting, being an American, it was nice to see familiar places and historical events). AC4:BF announced it would take to the Caribbean in a pirate setting and I could hear a collective groan from the fans of the series fatigued by a decade of pirates thanks to Disney. Let alone my least favorite part of AC3, the naval combat, taking a much larger stage this go around... Gameplay - ...I was concerned for no reason. The ship combat is not nearly as boring and lackluster as the original introduction in AC3. It feels much more fluid and integrated into the game than Connor's foray. The transitions are seamless between open world free-running and open sea sailing. There's SO much to explore I feel almost overwhelmed. You can purchase shortcuts to show all locales for a given collectible through the PSN (or XBL) but that's half the fun of the game anyway!! Combat is as fluid as ever, despite the occasional annoying group fight that you have to constantly be mindful of the "sniper on the roof" while you dispatch swarms of guards. Even things like winning a bar brawl to unlock that tavern give it that AC1 "investigation" progression feel. Ubisoft were even wise enough to bring back costumes that serve a special purpose. Despite feeling like a traitor wearing the Templar armor, you get a significant defensive bonus to make the Templar Hunt missions worth your time. And when you've leveled up your Jackdaw (the ship) to the point that it's able to take on the heavy Man-of-war ships without breaking a sweat, you still have the super challenging Legendary Ship battles to contend with on the open seas. Try accidentally engaging one before you're ready early on in the game and you'll see why they're legendary. I have a suspicion I'll be sinking hundreds of hours into this game just to enjoy all the bits and pieces. Remember the sometimes-frustrating "almanac pages" that didn't seem to really offer much reward in AC3? They're back, only now they unlock songs for your Jackdaw crew to sing while exploring the open seas. Still not a reason to stop your progression to hunt down every last one, but they do add a lot to the atmosphere of the game. And the second screen app is such a big help. It's a constantly open map that allows you to select waypoints on your tablet without having to pause the game. Whatever you do in app happens in realtime on screen. This is next gen. Controls - Not much to say here. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. They upgraded the controls at sea to where you don't feel completely helpless sailing into the wind during battles. As much as the "changing winds" may not be realistic, it's compromise to make the naval portion far less cumbersome and more enjoyable than the previous entry. Visuals/Audio - This is a shining example of what next gen polish will be for the next few years. Despite youtube videos of goofy bugs, I have yet to come across a single glitched pixel in my playthrough (sitting around 40 hours dedicated to exploring everything in game and only about half way through the story). And the audio is a character of it's own in this entry. From the period-style music to the sea chanties while sailing on the Jackdaw, you are completely immersed in the golden age of piracy. The only thing that could improve this experience would possibly be grabbing a bottle of Captain Morgan and playing it through some sort of Oculus Rift build, lol. Story - (No major spoilers) At about the halfway mark, this story has two interesting points of view. The main story, following the sailor-turned-captain Edward Kenway who's only initial motivation is to gain fame and fortune as a pirate in the golden age. It's a refreshing new spin on the stagnant "This is Desmond's great great great great (etc) grandfather and he was pulled into the war of Assassin's vs Templars by fate" tale. Edward is a true pirate, with no true allegience to anyone but himself and his crew/ship. He just happens to fall into the ongoing war through his friends but so far doesn't have the true motivator that all the other characters had right off the bat. The wraparound is a first person point of view "unknown" character that is starting his new job at Abstergo Entertainment, a division of Abstergo that is focused on selling immersive virtual reality experiences based on the real lives of past (related to desmond's bloodline) figures. In the course of the not-too-subtle first person experience, you encounter a LOT of (read: All of) the familiar faces from previous wrap arounds. Overall - This is the standard so far for this new generation. Killzone: Shadow Fall has shown what the system can do visually and with the controller touch pad gimmick, but AC4 outshines it by putting together the total package. I didn't address the multiplayer because it feels a little too much like a crowded version of Splinter Cell: Conviction's Spies vs Spies mode still, and though it's an interesting, intense distraction, the real meat of the AC games is the campaign. Like Bioshock, you shouldn't mark a game down because they tried something new, you only mark them down if they don't innovate and instead release something a step back. AC4:BF Outshines the competition in the launch window so far. It is a must own, regardless of which system you buy it on. For a launch title, this is as perfect as it gets but there's always room to push the limits. SIDE NOTE: I do have to mention that Amazon failed miserably with it's preorder fulfillment. First, the Black Pirate Edition came with a McFarlane Toys figure of Black Bart that Amazon stated would have additional DLC available in game with the figure. However, deceptively, they forgot to mention that it did not work for the next gen versions. Second, despite preordering, Amazon never sent the redemption code. It took several phone calls and emails to rectify the situation. I don't believe in penalizing a game's rating for the service a retailer gave, or else this would have lost another star or two due to Amazon's sketchy avoidance of resolving their issue. The icing on the cake was the Ubisoft website still showing the preorder bonus being available for Xbox One well after the PS4 launch only to have Amazon pull the Xbox One advertisement from its after it failed to fulfill preorder bonuses on the PS4 launch. And then, the customer service rep was able to respond with, "I can't find any details on a preorder bonus for Amazon." until directed to the Ubisoft site. OOPS!

Assassin's Creed is back to being amazing
First off, I'm probably the biggest Assassin's Creed fan there is. I was on board with the franchise since day one. I bought ever single Assassin's Creed game on launch day, full price and blew threw the games within a week to 2 weeks and then get all the collectibles, achievements and replaying so many missions just to get all the bonus content. I love the story, I love the gameplay and every game has been better than the previous... EXCEPT Assassin's Creed 3. That game almost ruined the franchise for me. It is actually the only one of the games I refuse to keep playing and reached around 60% in and gave up and re-sold on ebay. I read up on the story and saw youtube vids on what happened in the story but AC3 was just so bad, not to mention how the game ended was HORRIBLE. The only real thing I really liked in it a lot of the ship battles. Then comes AC4 and oh yes... so many ship battles. But also AC4 gives me the feel of playing AC2 again for the first time and I love the main character in this one. An assassin pirate ! So much yes here. I have the PS4 version so playing in 1080p, up-ed the graphics and textures for everything. Game play is smooth, 60fps most of the time and you can tell they really listened to the fans when making this game. But, they could have done better with the graphics and maybe do a polish on the gaming engine because the same glitches and bugs that were in previous games are still in this one. Like NPCs floating above the ground while standing or laying flat and running up against invisible walls sometimes. But these bugs are not game stopping and do not hinder much from the fun. Took me a while to get the hang of actually fighting naval battles (which is a major part of the game) but once I got the hang of it, its definitely my favorite part. Great way to make money in the game, compared to AC3. The way you make money in AC3 was such bull-jank. Anyway, this is my review for the single player. I have not played mutliplayer yet but planning on it within the next few days. MUST OWN if you are remotely a fan of the AC series.

Not ground-breaking, but very fun.
AC IV is not by any means the greatest Assassins Creed to date but it is a huge improvement over AC3 and for PS4 owners, it is arguably the richest gaming experience of all the available launch titles. Pros: The ship-to-ship combat is very fun, offering upgrade incentives and varying degrees of challenge to the player. Kenway's ship is upgradable by looting resources from enemy ships and upgrades are necessary to fight larger ships with more armor and firepower. Upgrading the ship takes a significant amount of looting and treasure hunting, but it is fun and never felt like work even though it's quite repetitive. Game-play in AC IV is very smooth and the graphics look excellent for an open world game with basically no load times. I had almost no issues climbing, jumping, running, or swimming throughout the game, although the controls while swimming underwater take a bit of getting used to. The multiplayer content is great. I have played every other AC title and never played multiplayer on any of them, so I was very pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable multiplayer is in AC IV. So far (early 2014) this multiplayer experience has provided me with more replay value than any other game for PS4. The scavenger hunts are always one of my favorite parts of any AC title and AC IV has added some new treasures to find across the pirate infested Caribbean. My favorite things to chase down are the sea shanty's which attempt to fly away as you approach and once captured, they provide your crew with a new song to sing as you sail the open sea. The portion of the gameplay outside of the animus is unique, without giving away any spoilers I will say that you are coerced by a mysterious man to steal data from the Abstergo office and deliver it to some familiar allies from previous games. The weapons and combat great, offering you killing power and mobility that you're used to from AC titles but in a new environment. Cons: The story follows Edward Kenway, a pirate who finds himself mixed-up with assassins and templars in the Caribbean Sea. Edward's loyalty is really only as good as the gold it provides at first, but throughout the game that changes as he get's more involved with the power struggle between the two secret societies. Edward does not develop any lasting relationships with other characters which leaves me as a player quite indifferent to who he is or who the other characters throughout the game are. The story will not be anybody's favorite part of this game, and would have docked some stars if the open world environment didn't pick up the slack. Also Kenway is not really an Assassin, which doesn't affect the gaming experience but it does cause some detachment from the over-arching conflict that is present in other AC titles. Climbing back onto the ship gets to be a little tedious as Kenway will find many reasons to stop the ship throughout the gameplay and unless your near a dingy on the the beach you have to swim out and climb up the side of the ship many many times. This didn't really bother me much, but it would be ideal if there were a sort of lift (like you might find in the cities to propel you to the top of a building) to assist you out of the water and onto the deck of the Jackdaw. The multiplayer is in need of patching, I have been playing on a consistently for about three months following the release of the PS4 and loading the multiplayer menu for AC IV still causes the game to freeze on a regular basis. Matches will also sometimes get a bit buggy as players come and go during the character selection, but this is more due to connectivity issues than the game itself. I have posted on Ubisofts forums about these issues and am still awaiting a fix. As with all Assassins Creed titles, there is very little danger to your character. I wish it weren't quite so easy to stay alive during the fighting in Assassins Creed, but it's also fun to be nearly invulnerable when surrounded by enemies. If you own a PS4 and you want to have some lasting content on your new console, I recommend this game over all the other launch titles for the PS4. My 5 stars would have been a 4 stars if this game hadn't come at a time when the PS4 was desperately starving for more content.
