What Arnica is better  for severe bruising and swelling? 30X or 30 C or any other? .

To clarify, the “X” or the “C” refers to the potency of the homeopathic medication.  While there are no clinical studies that make a direct comparison between a 30X or 30C formula to treat severe bruising, your decision can be based on either traditional use or clinical practice.  A traditional homeopathic practitioner would recommend using a stronger potency (30C HPUS) for more severe bruising.  However, in our clinical experience, most plastic surgeons prefer and recommend the 30X HPUS potency for their patients who experience facial bruising especially following a facial plastic surgery procedure.

Our Arnica 30X HPUS is 120 mg per tablet or 360 mg per dose.  It is important to note that unlike other medications, the potency of a Homeopathic drug is not based on weight but on potency.  In fact, Homeopathic products that claim their remedy is more effective because is contains “### mg” per dose is inconsistent with the practice of how Homeopathic products are manufactured and labeled under the law. 
 
With herbs, vitamins and most drugs, dosage is referred to as the quantity of an active ingredient (e.g., milligrams).  In contrast, with homeopathic medicines, dosage is referred to as dilutions.  Homeopathic medicines start with a natural substance (e.g. a plant like Arnica Montana) which is then diluted and succussed (shaken).  Diluting negates any problems with substances that may be harmful in their raw state whereas succussion enhances the healing properties of the substance. 
 
The potency strength is shown using a Roman numeral along with a number that indicates the repetitions of dilutions and succussing (e.g., 30X).  A decimal designation or “X” potency is based on the ratio of 1 part substance to 10 parts dilution.  A centesimal designation or “C” potency is based on the ratio of 1 part substance to 100 parts dilution.  A millesimal designation or “M” potency is based on the ratio of 1 part substance to 1,000 parts dilution.  The number of the potency indicates the number of dilutions that have been made.  For example, in a 30X formula, the original or mother tincture has been diluted 10 to the 30th power, or many times.
