If you run out of a color cartridge, will it print in black?

No! I cannot get mine to print in black and white when any color cartridge is empty. It does NOT automatically print in black only and even when I change the settings, it refuses to print. Once I replaced the color cartridges, it happily printed in black and white again. I've never had a printer do this.

I only want to print using black ink. Do I need to have all of the colors installed, or can I use black by itself?

Install the color as well and just never use it. Before print it’ll give you an option to choose color or black and you can also just use black.

Does it print in 12 x 12 paper?

No, the maximum size this machine can print is 8.5"x 14".
