An Excellent Handy Recorder
At the retail price of $180, the H2e is a very good deal -- and at the sale price I paid, $160, a steal. I have had three Zoom "handy" recorders in the past 20 years, upgraded over time (and sold each of the previous models) and the H2e is the best design yet, in terms of ease of use, functionality and audio quality at a low price. It is small, solid, with 15 dedicated "real" buttons for all basic recording and playback functions, and clear menus to access a wide range of advanced options. There is a built in loud speaker that is handy if you need to quickly check a recording in the field, but does not come close to the quality of the actual recorded audio files. The BIG operational feature of the H2e is 32 bit float recording. No need to fine tune record level to maximize signal level (and try not to clip occasional loud surprise). 32 bit float is excellent. And although most people will not need it directly, the mid-sides mode of recording is a fine feature and enables a 180 degree dual-mono mode, 90 and 120 degree stereo modes, using either the front or rear direction, as well as four channel surround sound recording. For those with expertise, mid-sides enables post-production control of the stereo image. The latest OS update (free) adds several useful functions including the Zoom TCA-1 timecode adapter support (useful if you are using the H2e for audio capture for video), an input gain setting function (not necessary but handy if you need to boost a signal in the field, away from your audio studio), an AI Noise Reduction function to analyze and reduce environmental and other noise (not really AI, but works reasonably well if you don't have better audio processors in your studio), and the ability to record, play and export MP3 files (not that I'd ever want to use MP3 audio -- but for many users this will be very handy). If you are experienced with audio recording and editing, you should find the H2e can record about anything you might want using its built-in mics. Although Zoom do not publish specs on frequency response and dynamic range, my testing indicates it can record reasonably "flat" from 40 Hz to 20 kHz and can provide a signal to noise ratio of 95 dB.If you are not experienced with audio technology, but need a way to record your own music or create a podcast, the H2e is a very easy to use recorder that can do the job well.In summary, a compact, rugged, flexible, quality audio tool.

Great little recorded highly recommend
I've really been impressed with the quality of recordings as well as the ease of use. Size is perfect. I got this for a few audio projects and liked what I'm getting from the audio so much (even without a windscreen) that I'm just looking for other ways to use the little guy. Admittedly I'm at the amateur level when it comes to field recordings but this recorder really does take the guesswork out and makes audio captured by a novice sound great. I imagine a professional would produce something even better. I'll get a windscreen eventually for those windy days, and play around with the stereo separation but I've got no complaints. Solid build. Easy to use. If there is a drawback, it's that this doesn't have an Android companion app to start and stop recording while it's far away on a tripod. I get it though, so I'm not taking off a star, because let's be honest. The world of Pro Audio is Mac first so it follows iOS would be a favored platform by extension. Hope they fix it but it's hardly a deal-breaker.Another interesting thing to note: aside from some drivers or plugins for editing in various DAW and audio editing suites, there has not been any sort of firmware update for it. I think that speaks highly of the device and how feature complete and obviously stable it is, and has been, since it's release. I compared this to Roland and Sony and for price/performance/feature set this ticked the right boxes.

A lot of buttons to navigate.
Not as intuitive to use as the $500 “pro” Sony recorder, the PCM-D50. Too many buttons obscuring the really basic functionality buttons that you need. It’s like playing Williams old-timey coin-op “Defender.”)

Just what I wanted.
I got this so I could record some concerts and sync it to my iphone. I've only it once as a stand alone but the recording was excellent. I'll be trying again tomorrow. This unit can be complex to use because it offers so much and at the same time is easy to use.

Just push record for a great recording!
Perfect! Great size, and great flexibility. Has the record button on the top which is nice. Also the front mic's and rear mic's each have their own switch which is great. Super easy to use, and no messing with adjusting the levels, it does it for you.

Love it!
Great option for a small 32-bit float surround recorder. The only improvement would be built-in Android app control. I think there is a USB dongle, but only iOS support last time I checked.

Very easy to set up and use.
This is the fourth recorder I’ve tried and I’m happy to say that I’m very pleased how well it records my live performances. Very easy to use and no need to worry about setting levels. The 32 bit float technology is a dream!

Excellent Small Recorder
I record audio for work. I’ve use man small, handheld size recorders. Had been using a Roland R-07, but wanted a recorder with a better screen. The H2essential is slight larger, but still a nice compact size and is very light. It’s mostly made of plastic and not metal. For recordings I use it as a small monitor recorder, so a standalone recording as a backup to my main recording. One of the biggest benefits of this recorder is it has directional speakers and you can select which direction you want to record. Very useful for my purposes. It also provides three separate recordings, a front only recording, a rear only recording and a mixed recording of both. This is very advantageous, as if someone is clicking away on a keyboard near the back of the recorder you can use the front facing recorder and heard voices better.Overall the recorder is easy to use, has a nice interface and the screen is easy to read. I like it better than my R-07 that I have been using for several years.

Great once you get your head around the audio formats and the app
I initially got the model before this, H2N but that was janky with an old style USB socket, was a little larger, and didn't offer the 32bit float.I wasn't too sure about this model, as it has 3 microphones instead of 5 and the previous H2N has got a great reputation (and is still being sold - even though this new model has been out a while).Recording with this device was extremely straight forward. My memory card I put in the device still had an audio recording from the H2N and I was a bit disapointed at first that it sounded better than what the H2Essentials recorded - However that changed once i got my head around the settings.First - if you want 32bit float - you need to set recording to 96khz and then I also set the format to raw, and turned on the option to include a mix file. That means when Im recording with the front and read and sides - I end up with three files to transfer to the PC. At first these confused me, because pulling the FRONT RAW FILE into a recording app, initially looked like a mono recording on my DAW (one wav to view) but its actually M/S (mid/side stereo). So you can use the Zoom VST and adjust the amount of MID and SIDE for this file to your liking. So you can do this, to both the FRONT RAW and the REAR RAW - and there are other free VST plugins which do a similar thing, so this is not unique to Zoom but of course they have to provide one for their product. Then I was concerned about phasing, and wondered how I should blend those two MID/SIDE signals together, to get the best mix. So then I was reminded of various PHASE VST plugins you can use, and when you put one of these on your master bus - you get a really good view of how the Mid/side Zoom VST is changing the stereo field, and can optimize the sides to get everything perfectly matched. With that the quality of the device really shone and it was very easy to get what sounded to me at least like a perfect representation of what I was hearing when I too the recording. It does have a lot of handling noise - but having now put it on an arm its much better.Sound out of the speaker of the devices is a bit thin and I cant imagine Id use that for very much other than to check Im getting anything at all. Ive tried it with a lavalier microphone, which I nearly sent back thinking it wasnt working - but lavalier at least the Rode mic I used requires power, and their is setting in the H2E to send power to the MicIn.After that the quality of the lavalier was great and was as expected.I purchased this device to record band practise, capture demos and ideas, grab audio to turn into samples - and Im looking forward to it - having better understood exactly what the 3 microphones are doing, and having the 32bit float (so no fiddling with gain, just hit record).
