The salt you need will likely depend on your region. Some places you can get away with water softener salt if your area doesn’t get too far below freezing. However, while expensive, this stuff rocks and is much more effective/faster than similar alternatives. The low temperature in which this salt is effective is only part of the story. I used some other salt that was effective five degrees higher than this one. What I found is that I also had to use much more (maybe about 1/3rd more) to get results and the “chemicals” that allow the salt to be effective quickly washed away making it ineffective the next day. This stuff continued working the next day if there was still salt left, and I needed less of it to do the same amount of work. My hang up is that it’s expensive, but it’s less expensive than a lawsuit and tapping into my home owners insurance. So, I grumble at the price compared to water softener salt that I used to use in warmer climates, but compared to similar products, I’ve found this to be more expensive upfront, but less expensive based on performance.

This is hands down my favorite ice melt for winter. Blue Heat Snow & Ice Melter works fast, spreads easily, and actually does what it promises without wrecking my driveway or landscaping. The biggest win for me is that it’s safe around my dogs. I never have to worry about paw irritation or harmful chemicals being tracked inside, which gives me real peace of mind during icy months. It melts ice quickly even in colder temperatures and doesn’t leave that gritty, salty mess behind. I’ve tried a lot of ice melts over the years, and this one strikes the perfect balance between performance and safety. Reliable, effective, and pet-friendly—this is a winter staple in my house, and I won’t go without it. Highly recommend for anyone with pets who still needs serious ice-melting power. 🐾❄️

Blue Heat is a terrific, highly effective ice-melting compound. It is a blend of magnesium chloride, sodium chloride, & calcium chloride (the 3 most effective salts for melting ice). I'll purchase more. Blue Heat works very quickly even when ambient temperatures are in the teens. The blue dye helps you determine where you may need to apply more.

So far its worked well. Expecting temps in the teens with icing over of melted snow. Although magnesium chloride works better in below zero temps than potassium chloride formulas its definitely NOT as safe for pets. Best to wipe off their paws & wear gloves when applying it. It IS much better than other harsher salt based products.

Melts ice as advertised. Side effect, I ended up with blue footprints throughout the house... But it is designed to to melt ice, and it does that well.

Works well and quickly

Came right to the door and is what we needed to get us through the long winter without slipping and falling on the ice.

This works really well but when I ordered it I thought it had said it was safe for pets but when it came, I did not see that on the bag. I have only used it in areas where my pets don't go, just in case. I'm not sure if it was my mistake or the add was worded wrong. Again, it works really well, was a good value, not necessarily a great value for the price but at least it was delivered to my door and I only had to lug it in off my porch. I was upset that they left it out in the weather and by the time I got home the box was soaked and falling apart. I have a sign on my front porch to leave packages inside. Some of the drivers do this and some don't. I use a scoop to spread it which is fairly easy to do. The bag is very heavy. The crystals are bright blue so you can see where you have spread them which is nice. If you don't have pets, it would be a great value.
